Where We Operate

H&M Transport runs non-emergency medical transportation across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and the Maryland suburbs, from a dispatch center in Gainesville and drivers staged across the region. Sixteen years, and the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation.

We hold WMATC authority 3449, which covers the Washington Metropolitan District — the District itself, the Northern Virginia jurisdictions, and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland. That is what lets a single booking cross a state line without a handoff, and it is not something every operator working this area holds.

Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889.

If your town isn’t listed

These are the areas where we run the most volume and where we’ve written up the local detail — which hospital entrance, which dialysis center, what the pickup actually involves. They are not the limit of where we go.

We run long-distance medical transport out of the region regularly: Fredericksburg, Stafford, Charlottesville, Richmond, and further when the care is further. We also run into West Virginia and up the corridor toward Baltimore.

If you don’t see your town, call and describe the trip. The answer is usually yes.

How the benefit works in each state

Who pays for a trip depends on where the rider lives, which is worth knowing before anyone picks up the phone.

Virginia. There is no single statewide Medicaid transportation broker. Fee-for-service members go through one vendor; managed care members go through whichever vendor their health plan uses. The number is on the back of the member’s ID card, and the broker has to authorize the trip before it is assigned to us.

Maryland and DC. H&M Transport is not a Medicaid provider in Maryland, so Medicaid rides in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties go through the county programs; in Montgomery County that is the Department of Transportation’s Medical Assistance Transportation Program. In DC, the only Medicaid plan we serve is UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of the District of Columbia, through SafeRide Health. In both, if your health plan’s ride benefit is administered by SafeRide Health, you can request H&M Transport by name.

Washington DC and across state lines. Our WMATC authority 3449 covers the District, the Northern Virginia jurisdictions, and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland — so a booking crosses a state line without a handoff and is quoted on the same rate card.

Medicare generally does not cover this kind of transport, though some Medicare Advantage plans include a limited benefit. Anything booked directly with us is a private-pay ride: see the rate card and cost calculator, or the full answer on Medicaid and Medicare coverage.

What we can’t take

H&M Transport runs non-emergency medical transportation. We carry people to scheduled medical care and back home again, and the ride itself is transport rather than treatment.

That means there are trips we can’t take. We are not an ambulance service. We don’t provide medical care or monitoring on board, we don’t transport anyone to an emergency room, and we don’t move patients from one hospital to another for a higher level of care. Those are ambulance trips, and they need a crew and a vehicle equipped for them.

If this is a medical emergency, call 911.

If you’re not sure which you need, call us and describe the situation. We would rather tell you to dial 911 than send the wrong vehicle.
