Wheelchair Transportation in Woodbridge, VA

Woodbridge stretches from the Occoquan down past Potomac Mills and out through Dale City and Lake Ridge, and a lot of the medical care our riders need sits inside that triangle. For a family member who uses a wheelchair, we send a van with a ramp or lift and a driver who handles the door, the chair and the walk inside at both ends.

Our Woodbridge pickups reach Dale City, Lake Ridge, Occoquan, Dumfries and Montclair. A wheelchair round trip starts at $55 per leg, Virginia trips run under our Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and a ride north into DC or to Montgomery or Prince George’s County is priced the same under WMATC authority 3449. Dispatch answers (703) 304-7889 at any hour, or request a trip online; our Woodbridge medical transportation page covers stretcher rides and riders who walk.

How a wheelchair ride works from a Dale City or Lake Ridge home

Most Woodbridge pickups are a townhouse with a few steps at the front door and a shared lot, a single-family house in Dale City, or an apartment near Potomac Mills. The driver parks in the nearest spot that works, comes to the door, and brings the rider out, with a stair chair team for the steps if you’ve told us about them. The rider stays in the wheelchair the whole way: up the ramp of a minivan or the lift of a full-size van, strapped to the floor at four points, and buckled in with a lap and shoulder belt.

Manual chairs, power chairs and scooters ride secured, and when the rider’s chair won’t suit the trip we bring one at no cost. One family member or caregiver comes along free, and service animals are welcome.

At Sentara Northern Virginia, Sentara Lake Ridge or a dialysis center on Dale Boulevard, the driver takes the rider inside to the desk or the chair. Drivers are certified in CPR and first aid, trained on manual and power chair securement, and cleared through a criminal background check and drug screening. Dispatch works out of Gainesville, but drivers take their vans home across the region, so the van at a Woodbridge door has usually started its day nearby. H&M Transport was the first NEMT provider in Virginia accredited by NEMTAC, which audits driver training, securement and vehicle standards.

Where Woodbridge wheelchair riders go

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center on Opitz Boulevard is the hospital here and a regular Woodbridge stop for us. Coming in from Potomac Center Boulevard, the main entrance is near the flag poles on the left; the visitor entrance, the Hylton Education Center and the Sentara Heart and Vascular Center are at the rear of the hospital, reached from River Rock Way. Tell us the department and the driver uses the right door.

Sentara Lake Ridge, at Minnieville and Summit School roads near Tackett’s Mill, is the outpatient campus for imaging, lab work and outpatient surgery, with free parking. Kaiser Permanente members now go to the Caton Hill Medical Center at 13285 Minnieville Road, which replaced the old Woodbridge medical center in 2022.

For care the local campuses do not offer, we drive Woodbridge riders north to Inova Fairfax, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and hospitals in DC, and we run a regular schedule to senior communities such as Westminster at Lake Ridge on Clipper Drive.

Dialysis rides in Woodbridge

Woodbridge riders have four centers within a short drive, and we run standing schedules to all of them:

  • DaVita Dale City Dialysis, 2920 Dale Blvd
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Potomac Mills / Lake Ridge, 3057 Golansky Blvd
  • U.S. Renal Care Woodbridge, 14000 Crown Ct
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Dumfries, 3671 Fettler Park Dr

Chair times go on a standing order once and stay booked. If a session at U.S. Renal Care Woodbridge or DaVita Dale City runs over, the trip home becomes a will-call: a driver reaches the center within 45 minutes of your call, and calling a little before treatment ends shortens the wait.

Wheelchair transportation prices in Woodbridge

From Woodbridge, the fare is built the way all our fares are: a pick-up charge, then the miles, from the 2026 private-pay card.

Trip type Pick-up fee Included miles Per mile after
Round trip $55 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
One way or discharge $90 None $3.00
Bariatric round trip (300 lb+) $100 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
Bariatric one way (300 lb+) $130 None $3.00
Long distance (50+ miles) $175 None $4.50

Potomac Mills to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center is a little over two miles, and Dale City is under five, so either round trip stays inside the five miles included on each leg: $110. Inova Fairfax Hospital is about 20 miles up I-95 and the Beltway: $55 plus 15 miles at $3.00 makes $100 a leg on a round trip, and the same 20 miles one way, such as a discharge home, is $90 plus $60, or $150.

Before the trip we price anything extra: $75 each way for a stair chair team at a townhouse with front steps, $30 for a pickup before 7am or after 6pm, $75 an hour for a driver who stays through the appointment, $20 for a second stop, and $35 per 2-liter oxygen tank unless the rider brings a portable. Cash or card works (cards carry 3%), personal checks don’t, and we’ll itemize a receipt when asked. The full card is on our rates page.

Wheelchair van or OmniRide Access?

OmniRide Access is the ADA paratransit service for Prince William County. A rider needs an eligibility review and an Access ID card, the pickup address has to be within three-quarters of a mile of an OmniRide Local bus route, trips are booked from the next service day up to 14 days out with no same-day rides, and the shared vans run curb to curb. Addresses outside those corridors aren’t served.

People often suggest MetroAccess, but Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park sit outside WMATA’s published MetroAccess service area. For residents who are 80 or older, have a disability or have limited income and don’t qualify for Medicaid transportation, the county’s Wheels-to-Wellness program subsidizes taxi rides to medical appointments, with a co-pay on each trip.

When a trip fits one of those programs, use it. The van is for what they leave out: an address away from a bus route, a same-day ride or a discharge from Sentara, help from inside the house to the check-in desk, an exact appointment time, or a trip into Fairfax, Arlington, DC, Montgomery or Prince George’s County.

Pickup tips for Woodbridge homes

  • Townhouses in Dale City and Lake Ridge often have several steps at the front door and shared parking lots. Give us the step count and the nearest spot where the van can stop.
  • Apartment complexes near Potomac Mills and along Route 1 can have several buildings on one address. Tell us the building number and entrance.
  • Senior communities such as Westminster at Lake Ridge have a set pickup point and front desk; tell us the building and the driver meets the rider there.
  • I-95 timing. Northbound traffic in the morning and southbound in the evening is predictable. We build it into the pickup time for trips to Fairfax, Alexandria and DC.

Paying for a Woodbridge wheelchair ride

Virginia Medicaid. A Woodbridge rider on Virginia Medicaid shouldn’t pay for a ride to a covered medical service, and the plan books the trip rather than us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Routine appointments usually need several business days’ notice; our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide has the steps.

Medicare. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for wheelchair vans; it covers an ambulance only when one is medically necessary. If the rider’s Medicare Advantage plan runs its rides through MTM Health or SafeRide Health, book through the plan and name H&M Transport.

Private pay and facilities. Private-pay riders pay the published card rates, no doctor’s order needed. Hospitals, nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates through our facilities program.

Booking notice, notes and changes

Give us three hours or more for a same-day ride or a discharge from Sentara; a booking a day ahead is guaranteed. Same-day trips are booked by calling dispatch at (703) 304-7889, and every booking is confirmed by call or text within two hours.

In the notes, say where the van can stop in a shared lot, the building and entrance at an apartment complex, the appointment and how long it runs, and the number of front steps. Riders over 300 lbs book bariatric service.

Cancel or change more than two hours before pickup and there’s no charge; a later cancellation or a no-show costs $50. Call, email Reservations@hmtransport.com or use our app.

Wheelchair transportation in Woodbridge: common questions

What does a wheelchair round trip from Dale City to Sentara Northern Virginia cost?

$110. The hospital is under five miles from Dale City, so both legs stay inside the five included miles. Past five miles each leg adds $3.00 a mile, and one way is $90 plus $3.00 a mile.

Can you pick up a discharge from Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center?

Yes, with three hours notice. Tell us the unit and whether the patient is going home or to a facility, and whether there are steps at the destination.

Where do Kaiser members in Woodbridge go now?

Kaiser Permanente’s Woodbridge services moved to the Caton Hill Medical Center at 13285 Minnieville Road in 2022. We drive riders there regularly.

Does MetroAccess cover Woodbridge?

No. Prince William County is outside WMATA’s published MetroAccess service area. OmniRide Access is the local ADA service, for addresses near OmniRide Local bus routes; for anything beyond that, a private van is the way to go.

Can you take Woodbridge riders to hospitals in Fairfax or DC?

Yes. Virginia trips run under our Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and WMATC authority 3449 covers DC and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

Can you set up dialysis rides to Fresenius Kidney Care Dumfries three days a week?

Yes. One standing order covers the chair days and times at Fresenius Dumfries, DaVita Dale City or any other center. If treatment runs long, the ride home becomes a will-call, with a driver there within 45 minutes of your call; calling a little before the session ends shortens the wait.

Will Virginia Medicaid cover a wheelchair ride from Woodbridge?

For a covered medical trip, such as dialysis at U.S. Renal Care on Crown Court or a visit to Sentara Northern Virginia, it should, and the plan books the ride rather than us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Rides we don’t run

Think of the van as the ride, never the care. Nothing medical happens on board, the van doesn’t go to emergency rooms, and a patient who needs another hospital’s higher level of care goes by ambulance. Call 911 for an emergency. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911. If sitting upright for the length of the trip isn’t safe, book stretcher transportation.
