Where we take Springfield riders

Springfield sits between three hospitals rather than next to one, and which of them a rider uses usually depends on which side of the interchange they live on.

Inova Alexandria Hospital takes most of the eastern and southern volume. Inova Fairfax Hospital takes the specialty care — oncology, cardiac, transplant follow-up — and is where the long treatment arcs run. Inova Mount Vernon Hospital picks up riders in Newington and Lorton.

The Inova HealthPlex at Franconia-Springfield handles outpatient care close to home, and the Inova Surgery Center – Franconia-Springfield in the same building accounts for a steady stream of outpatient procedures. Most surgery centers will not discharge a patient who has had sedation to a rideshare, which is the clearest case for booking transport before the day rather than on it.

The recurring volume out here runs through the rehab and senior communities — Greenspring, Sunrise of Springfield, Burke Health & Rehabilitation and August Healthcare at Leewood in Annandale. A crew running one trip in that cluster often has another on the same loop.

Beyond those, Springfield riders go north into Arlington, west into Prince William and across the river to the DC hospitals. Trips in Virginia run under our Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and WMATC authority 3449 covers the District and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.

Which vehicle a Springfield trip needs

We match the vehicle to how the rider gets around on the day, not to the distance.

Ambulatory. For a rider who walks, with a cane or a steady arm. The driver meets them at the door, rides with them to the HealthPlex or the hospital, and walks them in.

Stretcher. For a patient who can’t sit up safely, such as a discharge from Inova Alexandria to a rehab bed in Annandale. Two crew members carry the trip from bed to bed.

Bariatric. Riders over 300 lbs travel with equipment rated for the weight and a second crew member when the transfer needs one. These vehicles are fewer, so early notice helps.

Pickup around the interchange

The Springfield Interchange sits in the middle of this service area, so two addresses ten minutes apart on a map can take twenty-five at rush hour.

We schedule around it rather than hope. A morning appointment north of the interchange from a Springfield pickup means leaving earlier than the mileage suggests. If your appointment is in the morning peak, expect us earlier than you’d expect. This is not padding — it is the difference between arriving before the appointment and after it.

Garden apartments and condos around Springfield and Kingstowne need the floor number at booking. A second-floor unit with an exterior staircase and no elevator means the rider comes down stairs before they reach the vehicle, and that changes which crew and which equipment we send.

Single-family homes in West Springfield, Burke and Newington are usually straightforward where there’s a driveway. Where the drive is steep or the walk from the door to the curb is long, tell us — a ramp needs level ground and a long approach is the hard part of the trip for a rider having a bad day.

Senior communities like Greenspring have their own access rules, entrance preferences and sometimes a desk that wants a vehicle logged in before it arrives. Fifteen seconds of that at booking saves fifteen minutes at the door.

Steps at the house are a frequent surprise. Tell us the count and whether the stairway turns; a rider in a wheelchair who has to come down steps needs our stair chair team, which is $75 each way.

Dialysis and standing orders

Three treatment days a week add up to more than 300 rides a year, so dialysis trips are the ones we plan most carefully for Springfield riders.

Springfield riders mostly travel to DaVita Franconia Dialysis in Kingstowne and, for the Annandale side, DaVita Annandale Dialysis. Most patients on those schedules ride three days a week.

One call sets up a standing order: the center, the chair days and the times. If a session runs over, call for the ride home as a will-call, and a driver reaches the center within 45 minutes; calling a little before the session ends shortens the wait. Riders often leave the chair tired or lightheaded, so the driver plans for a slower walk to the van on the way home and doesn’t rush the transfer.

Booking, prices and who pays

Book by calling (703) 304-7889, day or night, or online. Same-day trips and discharges need three hours’ notice, a booking made a day ahead is guaranteed, and a call or text confirms it within two hours. Changes are free more than two hours before pickup; after that, or for a no-show, it’s $50.

Virginia Medicaid. A member going to covered care pays nothing, and the ride is arranged through Medicaid rather than booked with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Prices. Wheelchair and ambulatory round trips are $55 a leg with five miles included, and stretcher round trips are $230 a leg. From Greenspring to an appointment at the Inova HealthPlex on Walker Lane, about three and a half miles each way, a wheelchair round trip stays inside the included miles: $110. Original Medicare doesn’t cover these vans; a Medicare Advantage plan whose ride benefit runs through MTM Health or SafeRide Health can send the trip to us. The full rate card is on our rates page.

Questions we get from Springfield families

Yes. H&M Transport was Virginia’s first NEMTAC-accredited NEMT provider. The standards cover driver training, vehicle condition, how a wheelchair is secured and how incidents are handled.

Trips we don’t run from Springfield

Our vans carry people to scheduled care and home again. Nothing medical happens on board.

So there’s no monitoring or treatment on the way, no ride to an emergency room, and no move to another hospital for a higher level of care; those need an ambulance. We do run scheduled transfers for stable patients, such as Inova Alexandria to a rehab center. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.
