Mount Vernon draws from Alexandria, Huntington, Rose Hill, Kingstowne, Lorton, Newington and the Route 1 corridor down toward Fort Belvoir. For a lot of those riders it is closer than Inova Alexandria and considerably closer than Fairfax.
The rehabilitation volume is what makes this destination different. Inpatient rehab discharges into outpatient therapy, and outpatient therapy is two or three sessions a week for six to twelve weeks. That is a standing order rather than a series of bookings, and we set it up as one — you give us the days, the times and the destination once.
Route 1 is the corridor to plan around, and it is slow in both peaks.
Mount Vernon trips run on two tracks.
Discharges. Patients leaving the hospital or the rehab unit go home or on to a skilled nursing facility.
Scheduled arrivals. Appointments, imaging, infusions and outpatient procedures, plus a steady run of therapy sessions, with the ride back afterwards.
Emergency room runs and transfers to another hospital for a higher level of care belong to an ambulance.
Three hours’ notice covers a same-day discharge, stretcher included, and a booking the day before is guaranteed.
Two distinct patterns come off this hospital. Discharges — home or to a skilled nursing facility, with the usual requirements: level of service, stairs at the destination, oxygen, a realistic time. And recurring outpatient therapy, which is the larger volume over a year.
For the recurring schedules, tell us about weight-bearing restrictions and what equipment travels with the rider. Non-weight-bearing on one leg changes the transfer completely, so it’s the first thing to mention at booking. Walkers, crutches and canes ride along at no extra charge.

Pick by how the rider moves today; during rehab that can change from one month to the next.
Ambulatory — a rider on a walker or cane who manages with an arm to lean on; the driver helps at both doors.
Wheelchair transportation — the rider stays in the chair, loaded by ramp or lift and secured at four points before the van moves, and we can bring the chair.
Stretcher — for a patient who can’t sit up safely yet, often an early discharge from the rehab unit; two crew members handle the move.
Bariatric — riders over 300 pounds get rated equipment and added crew; we run fewer of these, so call ahead.
If you can’t tell which fits, describe the rider and any restrictions, and dispatch will choose with you before the van leaves.
Book through (703) 304-7889 around the clock. A same-day ride or discharge needs three hours’ notice, anything booked a day ahead is guaranteed, and we confirm by call or text within two hours. Rescheduling is free more than two hours before pickup; after that, or for a no-show, the fee is $50.
Prices and coverage. Wheelchair and ambulatory round trips are $55 a leg, five miles each way included, then $3 a mile; one way is $90 plus $3 a mile, and stretcher is $230 a leg round trip. The full rate card and estimator is published, so a twelve-week therapy schedule can be priced before it starts. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for these vans, but a Medicare Advantage plan whose ride benefit runs through MTM Health or SafeRide Health can send the trip to us. Medicaid-covered therapy starts with the plan. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.
H&M Transport, Virginia’s first NEMTAC-accredited NEMT provider, carries Mount Vernon riders to scheduled care and back; we transport, we don’t treat.
Our drivers don’t monitor patients, don’t run anyone to the emergency room and don’t move a patient from Mount Vernon to another hospital for a higher level of care. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.

Set the ride home as a will-call. A call to dispatch near the end of the session gets a driver moving; call when you’re finished and a driver arrives within 45 minutes. If you’d rather the driver stay, wait time is $75 an hour for wheelchair trips and $100 an hour for stretcher.
Yes, if you tell us when you book, whether it’s C. diff, MRSA or COVID. The crew wears the right protective gear, the van is disinfected after the trip, and dispatch quotes the added charge.
