Where we take Manassas riders

Most of the trips we run in Manassas go to a short list of places, and our drivers know the approach to each — which entrance to use, where to wait, how long the parking loop takes on a Monday morning.

UVA Health Prince William Medical Center on Sudley Road is the anchor. We run appointment trips there all week and discharges most days.

UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center picks up a lot of western Prince William riders, particularly from Gainesville, Haymarket and the Route 15 corridor. It is a shorter run for the drivers staged on that side of the county than Manassas itself.

Kaiser Permanente Manassas Medical Center handles a high volume of routine specialist and follow-up visits — the trips most likely to become a standing weekly or monthly booking.

For dialysis we run to DaVita CDC Manassas Dialysis on Lomond Drive and Fresenius Kidney Care Manassas, three days a week for most patients on those schedules.

We also take Manassas riders further out when the care is elsewhere: into Fairfax for Inova Fairfax or Fair Oaks, into Arlington, and across the river into Washington DC, where trips run under WMATC authority 3449 together with our Virginia DMV Certificate #524.

Picking the ride for a Manassas trip

We go by how the rider moves on the day, whether the trip is to Sudley Road or across the county.

Ambulatory. A rider who walks with an arm to lean on. The driver meets them at the door, gets them down the steps and walks them into UVA Health Prince William or the clinic.

Wheelchair. The rider stays in the chair, up a ramp or onto a lift and secured at four points before we move, and we bring a chair if needed. More on our wheelchair transportation service.

Stretcher. For a patient who can’t sit up safely, such as a Prince William Medical Center discharge to a nursing bed. Two crew members carry every stretcher trip.

Bariatric. For riders over 300 lbs, with rated equipment and a second crew member when needed. These vans are fewer, so call early.

If you’re not sure which applies, call and describe the situation. Getting it wrong means a vehicle arrives that can’t safely carry your rider, and that costs everyone a day.

What pickup in Manassas actually involves

Manassas housing varies more than people expect, and it decides how a pickup goes.

Stairs are the usual complication. Split-levels off Sudley and Centreville Road often have four to six steps to the front door with no handrail. Townhouses in Yorkshire and around Signal Hill typically have a stoop. If there are stairs between the door and the vehicle and your rider can’t walk them, we send a stair chair team — two trained crew with the right equipment — which carries a $75 surcharge each way. Tell us when you book, not when we arrive.

Storm doors and interior turns decide whether a wheelchair can come out the front at all. If the doorway is narrow or the hallway turns tight, mention it. We’d rather plan a route through the garage than improvise on the day.

Driveways and parking. Older Manassas streets are narrow, and some HOA communities in Bristow restrict where a vehicle can stop. Our vans need level ground to deploy a ramp. If there’s a spot that works better than the front door, tell dispatch and we’ll note it on the account permanently.

None of this is unusual, and none of it is a problem when we know in advance. It’s only a problem at seven in the morning on the doorstep.

Dialysis and standing orders

Dialysis schedules leave little room for error, so we plan them with care.

A typical Manassas patient is on a Monday–Wednesday–Friday or Tuesday–Thursday–Saturday rhythm at DaVita or Fresenius, four hours in the chair, and depleted afterwards. That shapes the ride: the outbound leg is straightforward, the return is the one that matters. Most dialysis riders use a will-call return — you call when you are ready rather than booking a fixed time — and our standard is arrival within 45 minutes of that call. If you or the clinic can call a little before you’re done, we’ll start a driver your way. The earlier the call, the shorter the wait.

We set these up as standing orders — one conversation, and the whole schedule runs without you calling each week. Changes go through dispatch and take effect the same day.

Treatment runs long sometimes. When it does, call dispatch and we adjust rather than leaving a driver idling or a patient waiting in a lobby. Pre-scheduled wait time is $75 per hour on wheelchair and ambulatory trips and $100 on stretcher — but a treatment running twenty minutes over isn’t a wait-time charge, it’s just dialysis.

Booking, coverage and payment

Same-day trips and discharges need three hours’ notice, a booking a day ahead is guaranteed, and we confirm by call or text within two hours. Changes are free more than two hours before pickup; later changes and no-shows are $50. For a first trip we need the rider’s name and date of birth, the pickup address, the destination and appointment time, mobility level, weight if bariatric applies, and any equipment coming along, such as oxygen, a power chair or an escort.

Medicaid. Virginia Medicaid transportation is booked through your plan’s transportation line, not directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. See our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide. We are an approved provider across Prince William County, and requesting us keeps your rides with the same team and the same vehicles.

Private pay. Published rates, no surprises; the full rate card and trip estimator is on the site. A wheelchair round trip is $55 per leg with five miles included each way and $3 a mile after that, so from Old Town Manassas to UVA Health Prince William, about two miles each way, it’s $110. One-way and discharge trips are $90 with mileage counted from the first mile. Stretcher is $230 per leg round trip and $260 one way. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for these vans, but a Medicare Advantage plan whose ride benefit runs through MTM Health or SafeRide Health can send the trip to us.

Facilities. If you’re booking for a hospital, skilled nursing facility or dialysis center, we commit to a three-hour maximum lead time — call by 2pm and your patient goes home today. Facility cancellations made more than two hours before pickup are free.

Questions we get from Manassas families

How far ahead should I book?

Three hours covers a same-day trip or a discharge, and a booking a day ahead is guaranteed. Bariatric and stretcher trips need more notice because we run fewer of those vehicles.

Can I ride along?

In most cases yes. Tell us when you book so we assign a vehicle with the seat available and confirm the arrangement for your trip.

Can a Manassas Medicaid member ride with H&M?

Yes, for covered care such as dialysis at DaVita CDC Manassas or an appointment on Sudley Road, and the member owes nothing. Medicaid assigns the trip, so that call comes first. Do you go into Washington DC?

Yes, and into Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland, under WMATC authority 3449 together with our Virginia DMV Certificate #524.

My mother doesn’t have a wheelchair. Is that a problem?

No. We’ll bring one. Mention it when you book so the right vehicle is assigned.

Are you accredited?

Yes. H&M Transport was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation, which covers driver training, vehicle standards, securement procedure and complaint handling.

What we can’t take

We carry Manassas riders to scheduled care and home again. The van is transport, not treatment.

So some trips aren’t ours: there’s no medical care or monitoring on board, no ride to an emergency room, and no move between hospitals for a higher level of care; an ambulance handles those. Scheduled transfers for stable patients, such as Prince William Medical Center to a rehab center, we run. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.
