Where we take Woodbridge riders

Most Woodbridge trips go to a short list of places, and our drivers know the approach to each — which entrance to use, where to wait, how long the loop takes on a Monday morning.

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center on Opitz Boulevard is the anchor. We run appointment trips there all week and discharges most days. Sentara Lake Ridge picks up a lot of the outpatient and imaging volume for riders on the western side of the Occoquan.

Kaiser Permanente’s Caton Hill Medical Center on Minnieville Road, which replaced the old Woodbridge medical center in 2022, handles a high volume of routine specialist and follow-up visits — the trips most likely to become a standing weekly or monthly booking.

For riders in Lorton and the northern edge of the county, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is often closer than anything in Woodbridge proper, and we run there regularly.

We take Woodbridge riders further out when the care is elsewhere: north to Inova Fairfax or Fair Oaks, west to UVA Health Prince William in Manassas, and across the river to Washington DC, where trips run under WMATC authority 3449 together with our Virginia DMV Certificate #524.

Choosing the vehicle in Woodbridge

It comes down to how the rider moves, whether the trip is to Opitz Boulevard or Fairfax.

Ambulatory. For a rider who walks with a hand on an arm. The driver meets them at the door, helps them down any steps and walks them into Sentara or Caton Hill.

Stretcher. For a patient who can’t sit up safely, such as a Sentara discharge to a nursing or rehab bed. Two crew members carry every stretcher trip.

Bariatric. For riders over 300 lbs, with rated equipment and a second crew member when needed. These vans are fewer, so book early.

Pickup along the Route 1 corridor

Woodbridge is not one kind of address, and the pickup is different in each.

Garden apartments — the two- and three-story walk-ups that make up much of the Route 1 corridor — are the ones that need the most planning. A second-floor unit with an exterior staircase and no elevator means the rider has to come down stairs before they reach the vehicle. Tell us the floor when you book. If the rider can’t manage stairs at all, say so, because that changes which crew and which equipment we send.

High-rise and senior housing is usually easier. There’s an elevator, a lobby and somewhere to stand out of the weather. What we need from you is which entrance the building wants us to use and whether the front desk needs to be told a vehicle is coming. Some buildings along the corridor are strict about that and will turn a driver away who hasn’t been logged in.

Single-family homes in Lake Ridge, Montclair and the newer Dumfries developments are straightforward when there’s a driveway. Where there isn’t, or where the driveway is steep, tell us — a ramp deployment needs level ground and a steep drive can mean parking on the street and covering the last stretch on foot.

Stairs come up a lot on the corridor. A stretcher needs room on the landing, and a wheelchair rider coming down an outside staircase needs our stair chair team, which is $75 each way. Tell us the floor.

Dialysis and standing orders

Three dialysis days a week add up to more than 150 trips a year, and each one has to meet a chair time.

In and around Woodbridge we run to DaVita Dale City Dialysis, Fresenius Kidney Care Dumfries, Fresenius Kidney Care Potomac Mills and US Renal Care Woodbridge, three days a week for most patients on those schedules.

One call sets up the standing order: the center, the days and the times. If a session runs over, call for a will-call ride home and a driver reaches the center within 45 minutes; a call a little before the session ends shortens the wait.

Riders leaving dialysis are often tired or a bit unsteady, so the driver plans for a slower walk out and doesn’t rush the transfer. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.

Booking, coverage and payment

We need three hours’ lead time on same-day rides and discharges, and once a trip is booked the day before it is guaranteed; a dispatcher calls or texts within two hours to confirm. Rescheduling is free more than two hours before pickup; a later change or a no-show is charged $50.

Virginia Medicaid. Prince William members bound for covered care, a Sentara appointment or a chair at Potomac Mills, are not charged for the ride, and the first call goes to Medicaid, not to us. Prices. Paying privately? A wheelchair or seated round trip runs $55 a leg and covers the first five miles in each direction, then $3 per mile; stretcher round trips run $230 a leg. From Lake Ridge to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, a little over three miles each way, a wheelchair round trip is $110. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for these vans, but a Medicare Advantage plan whose ride benefit runs through MTM Health or SafeRide Health can send the trip to us. The full card is on our rates page.

Facilities in Woodbridge — Sentara Northern Virginia’s discharge planners, the skilled nursing and rehab centers along the corridor, the assisted living communities in Lake Ridge — can set up an account with us and book without quoting each trip individually. If you’re scheduling discharges more than occasionally, that’s usually the arrangement that makes sense.

Questions we get from Woodbridge families

How much notice does a Woodbridge ride need?

Three hours covers a same-day trip or a hospital discharge, and a day ahead guarantees the booking. For stretcher or bariatric trips, or a morning run north on I-95, give us more time.

Does I-95 traffic affect my pickup time?

We build it into the schedule rather than hoping. A morning appointment in Fairfax or Arlington from a Woodbridge pickup means leaving earlier than the mileage suggests, and we plan the departure around the corridor rather than the map. If your appointment is north of the Occoquan in the morning peak, expect us earlier than you’d expect.

Do you cross into Stafford or Fredericksburg?

Yes. We run regularly to Stafford Hospital, Mary Washington in Fredericksburg and the dialysis centers in Garrisonville and Stafford. Long-distance trips out of the region are also something we do — call and describe the trip.

Can a Woodbridge Medicaid member ride with you?

They can, for covered care like a dialysis chair at US Renal Care Woodbridge or a Caton Hill specialist, at no charge to them. Their broker books the trip, so they shouldn’t call our dispatch first. Yes. Woodbridge riders go to Georgetown, GW, Sibley and Howard under WMATC authority 3449, with Virginia DMV Certificate #524 covering the Virginia end.

Are you accredited?

We are. NEMTAC accredited H&M Transport before any other NEMT company in Virginia, after looking at how our drivers train, how the vans are maintained, how chairs are tied down and what happens when something goes wrong.

What we can’t take

We drive Woodbridge riders to scheduled care and home again. The van carries people; it doesn’t treat them.

So there are trips we turn down: no medical monitoring on board, no drive to an emergency room, and no move between hospitals for a higher level of care. Those are ambulance trips. Scheduled moves for stable patients, such as Sentara to a rehab center, we run.
