Where we take Fredericksburg riders

Mary Washington Hospital is the anchor for the whole region — appointments all week, outpatient procedures and discharges most days. Stafford Hospital, also Mary Washington Healthcare, serves the northern half, and Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center covers the western side.

Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Fredericksburg generates a distinct pattern of its own: inpatient rehab discharges into outpatient therapy, and outpatient therapy is two or three sessions a week for weeks. That’s a standing order rather than a series of bookings, and we set it up as one.

Kaiser Permanente Fredericksburg and Kaiser Colonial Forge carry a high volume of routine specialist and follow-up visits, and Sentara Pratt Medical Center adds more. Fredericksburg Ambulatory Surgery Center and Fredericksburg Endoscopy Center account for day procedures — and a patient who has had sedation cannot be discharged to a rideshare.

Skilled nursing and rehab sit close together here: Carriage Hill, Falls Run, Fredericksburg Health and Rehab, Snowden and Woodmont among them. Discharges into those buildings are trips we run week after week.

Northward we take Fredericksburg riders to UVA Health Prince William and into Fairfax for Inova specialty care, and a trip into Washington DC runs under WMATC authority 3449 along with our Virginia DMV Certificate #524.

Picking the ride for a Fredericksburg trip

We choose the vehicle by how the rider gets around, whether the trip is two miles or sixty.

Ambulatory. A rider who walks with a steadying hand. The driver meets them at the door, helps them into the van and walks them into Mary Washington or the clinic.

Wheelchair. The chair rides up a ramp or a lift and is fastened at four points before the van moves, and if the rider has no chair, we bring one. More on our wheelchair transportation service.

Stretcher. For a rider who can’t sit up safely, often after surgery or on discharge to a rehab bed at Carriage Hill or Woodmont. Two crew members move the patient at each end.

Bariatric. Riders over 300 lbs get equipment rated for the weight and added crew. These vehicles are fewer, so tell us as early as you can.

Pickup around Fredericksburg

The I-95 corridor is the thing to plan around, and it is not forgiving.

We schedule against the corridor, not the mileage. A morning appointment north of Fredericksburg — in Prince William, Fairfax or DC — means leaving considerably earlier than the distance suggests. If your appointment is in the peak, expect us earlier than you’d expect. This is not padding; it’s the difference between arriving before the appointment and after it.

Single-family homes in Spotsylvania, Stafford and the newer Garrisonville developments are usually straightforward where there’s a driveway. Where the drive is steep or gravel, tell us — a ramp needs level ground.

Historic downtown Fredericksburg has its own version of the Old Town problem: narrow streets, no driveway, permit parking and steps up from the sidewalk to the front door. Tell us the number of steps when you book and whether there’s a handrail. That’s the difference between one crew member and two with a stair chair.

Senior and rehab communities have their own entrance preferences and sometimes a desk that wants a vehicle logged in before it arrives. Fifteen seconds of that at booking saves fifteen minutes at the door.

Stairs are worth mentioning at booking. A stretcher needs room on the turn, and a rider in a wheelchair coming down steps needs our stair chair team, $75 each way.

Dialysis and standing orders

Three dialysis sessions a week add up to more than 150 rides a year, and every one of them has a chair time attached.

There are a lot of dialysis centers in this area, and we run to Fresenius Kidney Care Fredericksburg, Fresenius Kidney Care Falls Run, Fresenius Kidney Care Jackson Square, Fresenius Kidney Care Spotsylvania, DaVita Lee’s Hill Dialysis and DaVita Park Hill Dialysis, plus Fresenius Kidney Care Stafford and DaVita Garrisonville Dialysis for riders on the northern side.

We book those once as a standing order with the center, the days and the times, and it repeats every week. When a session runs long, call for a will-call return and a driver reaches the center within 45 minutes; a call shortly before the session ends shortens the wait.

On the way home riders are often drained or lightheaded, so the driver expects a slower walk to the van and takes the transfer gently. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.

Booking, coverage and payment

Call (703) 304-7889 at any hour, or book online. Same-day trips and discharges need three hours’ notice, a booking a day ahead is guaranteed, and we confirm by call or text within two hours. Changes are free more than two hours before pickup; later changes and no-shows are $50.

Virginia Medicaid. Fredericksburg, Stafford and Spotsylvania members going to covered appointments, Mary Washington or a Fresenius chair alike, ride at no cost, but the booking has to begin with Medicaid instead of our phone line. Prices. A wheelchair or ambulatory round trip is $55 a leg with five miles included each way, then $3 a mile, and a stretcher round trip is $230 a leg. From historic downtown to Mary Washington Hospital, about two miles each way, a wheelchair round trip is $110. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for these vans, but a Medicare Advantage plan whose ride benefit runs through MTM Health or SafeRide Health can send the trip to us. The full card is on our rates page.

Questions we get from Fredericksburg families

Is a Fredericksburg ride covered by Virginia Medicaid?

Covered appointments are, whether it is therapy at Encompass or a chair at Falls Run, and the member is not billed. The trip is requested through Medicaid before it ever reaches our dispatch. Can you take me north to Fairfax or DC?

Yes, we run those regularly. A District hospital trip runs under WMATC authority 3449, with Virginia DMV Certificate #524 covering the Fredericksburg end, on one booking. Book ahead, because the morning I-95 stretch takes the longest.

How does I-95 affect my pickup time?

Enough that we plan for it rather than hope. A morning appointment north of Fredericksburg means an earlier departure than the mileage suggests. We’d rather be early at your door than late at the clinic.

How much notice does a Fredericksburg ride need?

Are you accredited?

Yes. H&M Transport was Virginia’s first NEMTAC-accredited NEMT provider, and the standard covers driver training, vehicle standards, how a wheelchair is secured and how incidents are handled.

What we can’t take

We drive Fredericksburg riders to scheduled medical care and back. Nothing clinical happens in the van.

That leaves out some trips: no monitoring or treatment on the way, no runs to an emergency room, and no transfer to another hospital for a higher level of care. An ambulance handles those. Scheduled moves for stable patients, like Mary Washington to Encompass, are trips we run.
