What the job actually looks like

Our drivers run scheduled medical trips across Northern Virginia, Washington DC and the Maryland suburbs: dialysis runs on a standing three-day-a-week schedule, hospital discharges home or on to rehab, rides to oncology and cardiac rehab, and the occasional long-distance move out of state.

It is door-through-door work. You are not pulling up to a curb and waiting. You go to the door, help the rider out of the house, load a wheelchair or a cot, secure it properly, and walk them into the clinic at the other end. On a stretcher trip you work as part of a two-person crew.

What we look for

  • A clean driving record and the patience to protect it in Northern Virginia traffic
  • Comfort working with elderly riders, people in pain, and families who are having a hard day
  • Reliability — a dialysis rider who misses a chair does not simply reschedule
  • Discretion about what you see and hear in someone’s home
  • Physical capability for wheelchair loading and two-person cot work

Prior NEMT, EMS, home health or caregiving experience helps, but we have hired good drivers from outside all of those.

Pay

$16 to $22 an hour depending on the role and your experience. Wheelchair van drivers start at $18.50 to $19.50 an hour, and our top drivers earn $50,000 to $65,000 a year.

  • Weekly pay
  • Frequent overtime, paid at time and a half
  • Discretionary bonuses
  • Tips — we run a large private-pay customer base, and riders tip

Benefits

  • Health insurance, 50% company-paid
  • Dental and vision insurance
  • Short- and long-term disability
  • Life insurance
  • Car wash membership provided, so keeping your van clean is not coming out of your pocket

Certification — we pay for it

Two certifications matter in this work, and if you do not already hold them, we provide the training and the certification:

First Aid and CPR. Required for the role. Already certified? Bring the card. Not certified? We will get you there.

PASS — Passenger Assistance, Safety and Sensitivity. The industry standard for securement, transfers and working with riders who have mobility, cognitive or sensory needs. Same arrangement: we train and certify you.

You do not need prior NEMT experience to apply. Drivers have come to us from commercial driving, home health, caregiving and from outside all of it.

What the role requires

  • 23 years old or over — a contract requirement, not our preference
  • A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Passing a pre-employment drug screen, background check and MVR screening
  • Flexibility for rotating weekends, holidays and occasional on-call shifts
  • Comfort with a smartphone app for navigation and trip status
  • Willingness to drive in all weather
  • Physical capability to lift, push, pull and assist riders, including transfers between a bed or chair and a wheelchair

Daily schedules can shift by up to two hours, and the work occasionally includes long-distance transports of 250 miles or more.

Why people stay

H&M Transport is family owned and operated and has been running since 2010. We are accredited by NEMTAC, hold Virginia DMV Certificate #524 and WMATC authority 3449, and our 80+ wheelchair vans are 2018 or newer — which matters more than it sounds when a van is your office.

Routes are largely scheduled rather than dispatched at random, so you generally know what your day looks like before it starts.
