Getting to care in Northern Virginia
Most people find us because a ride fell through. The appointment is Tuesday at 9am, the rider cannot drive, the family member who usually helps is at work, and a rideshare driver is not going to load a wheelchair or walk anyone to the door.
H&M Transport exists for that gap. We have been running non-emergency medical transportation across Northern Virginia since 2010, we are NEMTAC accredited, and we hold Virginia DMV Certificate #524 and WMATC authority 3449 — which is what lets us cross into Washington DC and Maryland rather than stopping at the state line.
How a trip works
Door through door, not curb to curb. The driver comes to the door, helps the rider out of the house, secures the wheelchair or cot in the van, and walks them into the clinic at the other end. If there are stairs, we send a second crew member.
Three hours’ notice, minimum. That is all we need for a same-day request or a discharge, and we can cover most of them inside that window. Book 24 hours ahead and availability is guaranteed. You get a confirmation. Every booking triggers a confirmation call or text within two hours. If you do not get one, assume the reservation did not land and call us.
Who we drive for
Families and individual riders booking dialysis runs, oncology appointments, surgery and pre-op visits, imaging, physical therapy and specialist follow-ups.
Hospitals and health systems needing discharge transport home or on to a skilled nursing or rehabilitation facility, and scheduled arrivals for appointments and outpatient procedures.
Skilled nursing, rehab and assisted living facilities moving residents to recurring treatment on a standing schedule.
Dialysis centers, where the same riders need the same chairs three days a week, every week.
Transportation brokers and Medicare Advantage plans, including Access2Care and SafeRide Health.
How rides get paid for
Medicaid. If the rider is a Medicaid member and the trip is to a covered medical service, the ride should cost them nothing — and it has to be authorized by their transportation broker rather than booked directly with us. Virginia has no single statewide broker: fee-for-service members go through one vendor, managed care members through whichever vendor their health plan uses, and the number is on the back of the member’s ID card. In Maryland the benefit is administered county by county through the local health department. Once the broker authorizes a trip it may well be assigned to us — but the authorization starts with them.
Medicare. Original Medicare does not cover wheelchair, ambulatory or stretcher van transportation. It covers non-emergency ambulance service when medical necessity is documented. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a limited transportation benefit — usually a fixed number of trips per year, administered by a broker such as Access2Care or SafeRide Health. If yours does, book through the broker and ask for H&M Transport by name.
Private pay. Any ride booked directly with us is a private-pay ride, whoever the rider is. We quote the trip before you commit to it, and the full rate card and cost calculator is published. Private health insurance rarely covers non-emergency medical transportation. Long-term care insurance sometimes does, and veterans may have transport benefits through the VA.
Facility accounts. Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and dialysis centers book on contracted rates rather than a quote per trip.

What we cannot take
We are not an ambulance service. We do not provide medical care or monitoring on board, we do not transport anyone to an emergency room, and we do not move patients from one hospital to another for a higher level of care. Those are ambulance trips and they need a crew and a vehicle equipped for them.
