Wheelchair Transportation in Stafford, VA

Care for Stafford riders runs two ways: toward Stafford Hospital and Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, or north up I-95 to Woodbridge. Either way, a rider in a wheelchair gets a van with a ramp or lift and a driver who handles the door at home and the walk inside at the other end.

Our Stafford pickups cover Stafford Courthouse, Aquia Harbour, Garrisonville, Falmouth and north toward Quantico. A wheelchair round trip starts at $55 per leg. Virginia trips run under our Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and WMATC authority 3449 carries a trip on into DC or to Montgomery or Prince George’s County. Dispatch takes calls at (703) 304-7889 day and night, or you can book online; stretcher service and rides for people who walk are on our Stafford medical transportation page.

A Stafford wheelchair ride, from pickup to drop-off

Stafford pickups range from gated neighborhoods like Aquia Harbour to newer subdivisions off Garrisonville Road and older homes with front steps near Falmouth. The driver comes to the door, brings the rider out, and arranges a stair chair team when there are steps the rider can’t manage. Once the wheelchair is up a minivan ramp or on a full-size van’s lift, four straps secure it to the floor and the rider wears a lap and shoulder belt for the drive.

We secure manual chairs, power chairs and scooters, and if the rider’s chair isn’t suitable, we bring a wheelchair at no charge. One family member or caregiver rides free, and service animals are welcome.

At Stafford Hospital, Mary Washington or a dialysis center on Garrisonville Road, the driver walks the rider in to the desk or the chair. Drivers are CPR and first-aid certified, trained on manual and power chair securement, and screened with a criminal background check and drug test. Dispatch works from Gainesville while drivers take their vans home across the region, and H&M Transport holds NEMTAC accreditation, the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn it, after an audit of training, securement and vehicles.

Stafford, Fredericksburg and Woodbridge hospitals we drive to

Stafford Hospital sits directly off I-95 at Exit 140, at 101 Hospital Center Boulevard, and it is a regular stop for us here, a 174-bed community hospital a few minutes from Courthouse Road. The hospital does not publish a patient drop-off door, so for a discharge we confirm the entrance with the unit first.

Mary Washington Hospital on Sam Perry Boulevard in Fredericksburg is the larger regional center, with a Level II trauma center and a primary stroke center. North Stafford families often use Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge instead; visitors there show a government-issued photo ID at the entrance.

We also pick up regularly at Viva Senior Living at Stafford, Marian Manor of Stafford, Woodmont Center, and the three Brimley Drive campuses: Falls Run Nursing and Rehabilitation, Berea Health & Rehab Center and Harmony at Falls Run, formerly The Crossings at Falls Run.

Dialysis rides in Stafford

We run standing dialysis schedules for Stafford riders, including to:

  • DaVita Garrisonville Dialysis Center, 70 Doc Stone Rd, Stafford
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Garrisonville, 479 Garrisonville Rd, Stafford
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Falls Run, 127 Lichfield Blvd, Fredericksburg
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Dumfries, 3671 Fettler Park Dr, Dumfries
  • DaVita Park Hill Dialysis, 1151 Hospital Dr, Fredericksburg

One phone call sets the dialysis days and chair times as a standing order. If a session at DaVita Garrisonville or Fresenius Garrisonville runs late, the ride home becomes a will-call: a van is at the center within 45 minutes of your call, and calling a little before treatment ends shortens the wait.

Wheelchair transportation prices in Stafford

Stafford fares follow the 2026 private-pay card below: a set charge for the pick-up, then a rate per mile.

Trip type Pick-up fee Included miles Per mile after
Round trip $55 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
One way or discharge $90 None $3.00
Bariatric round trip (300 lb+) $100 per leg 5 per leg $3.00

Aquia Harbour to DaVita Garrisonville is under three miles, so a round trip is $110. Aquia Harbour to Stafford Hospital is about six miles each way: $55 plus one extra mile at $3.00, or $58 a leg and $116 round trip. A discharge from Mary Washington Hospital home to Garrisonville, about 15 miles, is $90 plus $45, so $135. A round trip from Garrisonville to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, about 16 miles each way, is $88 a leg ($55 plus 11 miles at $3.00), or $176.

We’ll name any extra in the quote: $75 each way when a stair chair team is needed, $30 for pickups before 7am or after 6pm, $75 an hour of prescheduled waiting, $20 per added stop, and $35 per 2-liter oxygen tank unless the rider brings a portable. There’s a 3% fee on cards, cash is fine, personal checks aren’t taken, and itemized receipts come on request. The complete card is on our rates page.

Wheelchair van or FXBGO! and Mobility Options?

MetroAccess doesn’t serve Stafford, so the public options work differently here. FXBGO!, the Fredericksburg regional bus system that replaced the FRED name in 2021, runs wheelchair-lift buses through Stafford and on request will leave its route by up to three-quarters of a mile for a pickup; requests go in a week ahead, and staff check that the stop is safe to board.

Mobility Options, from the Healthy Generations Area Agency on Aging, offers limited door-to-door rides to Stafford residents 60 and over and people with disabilities after a transportation needs assessment, weekdays from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m., booked between a week and 30 days ahead, at two or three trips a month per person. OmniRide and VRE carry Stafford commuters north, but they are commuter services, not paratransit.

Those services work for planned trips that fit their rules. Call us when the trip doesn’t: a same-day ride, a discharge, help from inside the house, a fixed appointment time, a destination off the bus routes, or a rider without an assessment.

Pickup tips for Stafford homes and buildings

  • Aquia Harbour is gated. Add H&M Transport in the Gate Sentry app before pickup, or the gate can be reached at 540-659-5224; the driver uses the Non-Decal/Visitor lane.
  • Garrisonville Road has two dialysis centers and a commuter lot close together. Give us the exact address and suite.
  • The 95 Express Lanes reverse direction by time of day, so we plan the ride home separately from the ride out.
  • Homes with steps: tell us the count when you book; a stair chair team is routine when we know ahead.

Who pays for a Stafford ride

Virginia Medicaid. A Virginia Medicaid member going to a covered medical service shouldn’t pay for the ride, and the plan schedules it rather than us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Allow several business days for routine appointments; our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide explains the steps.

Medicare. Original Medicare doesn’t cover wheelchair vans; it pays for an ambulance only if one is medically necessary. For a Medicare Advantage plan whose rides MTM Health or SafeRide Health administers, book through the plan and name H&M Transport.

Private pay and facilities. Families booking directly pay the published rates, with no doctor’s order required. Hospitals, nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates through our facilities program.

How far ahead to book, and changing a trip

Three hours is our minimum notice for a same-day ride or a discharge from Stafford Hospital, and a booking made a day ahead is guaranteed. Same-day requests are taken by phone at (703) 304-7889, and each booking is confirmed by call or text within two hours.

Use the notes for the Aquia Harbour gate, the building on a Brimley Drive campus, the appointment and how long it runs, and the number of steps at the home. Riders over 300 lbs need bariatric service.

Changing or cancelling more than two hours before pickup is free; later than that, or a no-show, costs $50. Use the phone, Reservations@hmtransport.com or our app.

Wheelchair transportation in Stafford: common questions

What does a round trip from Aquia Harbour to Stafford Hospital cost?

$116. The hospital is about six miles from Aquia Harbour, one mile past the five included on each leg, so each leg is $58. One way is $90 plus $3.00 a mile.

Can you pick up inside Aquia Harbour?

Yes. Add H&M Transport in the Gate Sentry app before the ride, or call the gate at 540-659-5224, and the driver uses the visitor lane.

Will Virginia Medicaid cover a Stafford rider’s wheelchair van to Mary Washington or dialysis?

Yes, if the visit is covered medical care: the member pays nothing, and the trip is arranged by Medicaid’s transportation broker, not by our dispatchers. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Do you pick up at the Brimley Drive campuses?

Yes, at Falls Run Nursing and Rehabilitation, Berea Health & Rehab Center and Harmony at Falls Run. The three share the street, so tell us the building name and the entrance.

Do you go from Stafford to hospitals in Woodbridge or Fredericksburg?

Yes. Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge and Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg are regular runs, both under our Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and WMATC authority 3449 covers trips that continue into DC, Montgomery or Prince George’s County.

Can you set up dialysis rides to Fresenius Kidney Care Falls Run three days a week?

Yes. We take the chair days and times once and keep them as a standing order. When a session runs over, call for the ride home as a will-call; a van reaches the center within 45 minutes, and calling shortly before treatment ends brings it sooner.

Not a medical ride

A wheelchair van is transportation and nothing more: nobody on board provides medical care or monitoring, we don’t drive to emergency rooms, and moving a patient to another hospital for a higher level of care takes an ambulance. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911. A rider who can’t stay seated upright for the trip should book stretcher transportation.
