Fauquier Health Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Oak Springs of Warrenton, Brookside Rehab and Nursing and United Health & Rehabilitation carry most of the recurring volume — discharges into them, and residents going out to appointments.

The trips that matter most out here are the ones that leave the county. A great deal of specialist care for Fauquier residents happens at UVA Health Prince William in Manassas, at Inova Fairfax for oncology, cardiac and transplant follow-up, and at UVA Health Haymarket. Distance is the planning problem here, not parking.

The drives are long and the appointments are not closer than they look. Warrenton to Inova Fairfax is a real journey, and a morning appointment means leaving considerably earlier than the mileage suggests. We build the corridor into the schedule rather than the map. We’d also appreciate more notice than we would closer in — the next available vehicle may genuinely be a long way off.

Rural addresses. Long gravel drives, no street lighting, and mailboxes that don’t match the house are all normal out here. A ramp needs level ground, and gravel on a slope is not it. Tell us where the crew should stop and whether the approach is passable in bad weather.

Farm and back-road addresses sometimes don’t resolve properly on GPS. If your address is one of those, give dispatch a landmark or a cross road when you book. It saves more time than anything else you could tell us.

Snow and ice change the pickup. A Fauquier drive that hasn’t been cleared makes the ramp harder to set down and the last few feet riskier for the rider. After a storm, a shoveled path to the van is the most useful thing a family can do.

Steps matter on old farmhouses and porches. Tell us how many and whether the stairs turn, and if a wheelchair rider has to come down them, the stair chair team is $75 each way.

Dialysis and standing orders

Fauquier dialysis riders travel three days a week, often a long way, so those trips are planned with the most care.

Warrenton riders on dialysis usually travel toward Manassas or Haymarket — DaVita Bull Run Dialysis, DaVita Haymarket Dialysis and Fresenius Kidney Care Prince William County are the centers we run to most from Fauquier. Rates. Wheelchair and ambulatory round trips are $55 a leg with five miles included, then $3.00 a mile, and stretcher round trips are $230 a leg. A wheelchair round trip from Old Town Warrenton to an appointment at Fauquier Hospital, about two miles each way, is $110. What our Warrenton vans don’t do

We drive people to scheduled care and home again. There is no medical care in the van.

We don’t monitor or treat on board, go to emergency rooms, or move patients to another hospital for a higher level of care; those are ambulance trips.
