What our wheelchair service includes in Falls Church

Every trip is door-through-door. The driver comes to the door of the home, the apartment or the facility room, helps the rider out, and at the other end takes them inside to the check-in desk or the dialysis chair rather than leaving them at the curb.

• The rider stays in the chair. The chair goes up a ramp on our minivans or a hydraulic lift on our full-size vans, is strapped to the floor at four points, and the rider wears a lap and shoulder belt. Nobody is lifted into a car seat.

Where we take wheelchair riders in Falls Church

VHC Health on N. George Mason Drive in Arlington is a short run east. Drivers reach it from I-66 at Exit 71, then Glebe Road, Washington Boulevard and George Mason Drive. The campus map marks pick-up and drop-off areas, the Outpatient Pavilion at 1851 N. George Mason Drive uses the Purple Garage in Zone E, and the first 30 minutes of parking are free.

The Inova Fairfax Hospital campus at 3300 Gallows Road shares the Falls Church mailing address but sits in Merrifield, in Fairfax County. The Blue Garage off Gallows Road serves the Surgery Center; the Green and Gray garages off Woodburn Road serve the towers, Women’s, Children’s and Schar Heart and Vascular. Every trip is a pick-up fee plus mileage, and the rates are the same everywhere we drive. These are our 2026 private-pay rates.

A ten-mile round trip is $55 plus five extra miles at $3.00 on each leg, so $70 each way and $140 in total. The same ten miles one way, such as a discharge home, is $90 plus $30, so $120. A round trip from The Kensington on West Broad Street to VHC Health in Arlington, about four miles each way, stays inside the included miles: $55 per leg, or $110 in total.

Add-ons, named up front. Stair chair team, $75 each way, when the rider cannot manage steps. After hours (before 7am or after 6pm), $30. Prescheduled wait time, $75 per hour. Additional stop, $20. Wheelchair van or Fare Wheels, TOPS and MetroAccess?

Which public programs apply depends on whether the rider lives in the City or the county. City residents who are 62 or older or permanently disabled, with income of $37,000 or less, can use Fare Wheels: $40 a month in taxi coupons for a $10 co-pay. TOPS, which replaced Seniors On-The-Go! in 2021, serves Fairfax County and City residents who qualify by age and income, disability benefits or MetroAccess registration, with a debit card worth $100 in rides for $20 on taxis, Uber and Lyft, and Metro. Fastran carries county and City residents who are referred and certified through a participating program such as a senior center. MetroAccess is shared-ride, door-to-door paratransit that needs a written application and an in-person interview, for trips near bus and rail routes. For adults 50 and over, the Shepherd’s Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church offers free volunteer rides in volunteers’ own cars.

A private wheelchair van covers what those do not: a same-day ride or a hospital discharge, a rider who stays in their chair and cannot move into a car seat, help from inside the home to the check-in desk, an exact appointment time, a trip into DC or Maryland, or a rider who has not been certified.

Pickup tips for Falls Church homes and communities

Booking, notice and cancellations

• Same-day requests: call (703) 304-7889 and speak with dispatch.
• Notice: we need a minimum of three hours notice for same-day requests and discharges. Booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability.
• Trip details: use the notes field for the entrance, the building or unit number, the appointment type, how long it should run, and the number of steps at the home.
• Stairs: when a rider in a wheelchair has to go up or down steps, we send a stair chair team, which adds $75 each way.
• Weight: for riders over 300 lbs, select bariatric service.
• Changes and cancellations: cancel or change at least two hours before pickup to avoid a fee, by phone, by email at Reservations@hmtransport.com, or in our mobile app.
