Non-Emergency Medical Transportation in Falls Church, VA

When a family member in Falls Church needs to reach a medical appointment and a car will not work, because they use a wheelchair, need help from the door, or are coming home from a hospital and must travel lying down, we send the right vehicle and a driver who takes them door-through-door. H&M Transport has driven Northern Virginia riders for about 16 years and was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation.

A Falls Church address can mean the small independent City of Falls Church or a much larger stretch of Fairfax County that shares the name. We cover both: the City, Seven Corners, Baileys Crossroads, Idylwood and West Falls Church. Both sit inside the Washington Metropolitan District, so under WMATC authority 3449 a pickup here can reach an appointment in DC or the Maryland suburbs and return on one booking. Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889, or you can request a trip online.

Where we take Falls Church riders

The Inova Fairfax Hospital campus at 3300 Gallows Road has a Falls Church mailing address, but it is not in the City; it sits in the Merrifield area of Fairfax County, a few miles west. The campus also includes Inova Women’s Hospital, Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital and Inova Schar Heart and Vascular. The Blue Garage, off Gallows Road by Blue Road, serves the Professional Services Building and the Surgery Center; the Green and Gray garages, off Woodburn Road and Wellness Boulevard, serve the towers, Women’s, Children’s and Schar Heart and Vascular. Inova allows riders with limited mobility to be dropped at the main entrances. Give us the building and unit from the paperwork and the driver heads for the right one. We do not use the emergency entrance.

East of the City, VHC Health at 1701 N. George Mason Drive in Arlington is the closest hospital for many Falls Church families. Its garages are organized in Zones A through E, the campus map marks pick-up and drop-off areas, and the Outpatient Pavilion at 1851 N. George Mason Drive, for imaging, endoscopy, lab, outpatient rehab and surgery, uses the Purple Garage in Zone E. Parking is free for the first 30 minutes, so a quick drop-off costs families nothing.

For Baileys Crossroads and the Route 7 corridor toward Alexandria, Inova Alexandria Hospital at 4320 Seminary Road is the nearest Inova inpatient hospital, with free parking in front and across Howard Street. Inside the City, Kaiser Permanente Falls Church Medical Center at 201 N. Washington Street is an outpatient center for Kaiser members; it is not a hospital.

We also serve residents of Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads, The Kensington Falls Church on West Broad Street and Chesterbrook Residences on Westmoreland Street, and run discharges and appointments for Vierra Falls Church on Powhatan Street, formerly Powhatan Nursing Home, The Boulevard Post Acute on Arlington Boulevard and August Healthcare at Iliff in Dunn Loring.

Choosing your level of service

Four options, and the right one depends on how your rider moves rather than how far they are going.

Ambulatory is for someone who can walk to and from the vehicle, with a steadying arm if needed. Ambulatory riders travel in the same minivans and full-size vans as the rest of the fleet, and the driver assists at the door and again at the destination. If the rider can manage the steps with the driver’s help, stairs cost nothing extra.

Wheelchair is for a rider who stays in their chair for the trip. The chair goes up a ramp on our minivans or a hydraulic lift on our full-size vans, and it is secured at four points before the vehicle moves. You do not need to own a wheelchair; we can bring one. See wheelchair transportation in Falls Church for prices and details.

Stretcher is for a rider who cannot sit upright safely for the journey, often after surgery or on discharge to a rehab or skilled nursing facility. Two crew members run every stretcher trip, bed to bed. See stretcher transportation.

Bariatric is for riders over 300 lbs. We use specialized vehicles with wider ramps and roomier interiors, and add a second crew member when the transfer or the route out of the home calls for it. Give us as much notice as you can.

If you are not sure which applies, call and describe the situation. The right vehicle at the door matters more than almost anything else about the booking.

Pickup in Falls Church, Seven Corners and Baileys Crossroads

  • City or county. A Falls Church address may be in the City (22046) or in Fairfax County (22041, 22042, 22043 or 22044). Give us the full street address and any building name so the driver goes to the right place.
  • Seven Corners. Broad Street, Route 7, Wilson Boulevard, Sleepy Hollow Road and the Route 50 service roads all meet here, and lane choice matters. We plan the approach to Route 50 addresses, such as U.S. Renal Care at 6541 Arlington Boulevard, before the driver sets out.
  • Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads. Independent living, assisted living, memory care and nursing share one campus at 3440 S. Jefferson Street. For a discharge from the nursing unit, tell us the entrance and the floor.
  • Route 7 and US-29 in the City. The Kensington is on West Broad Street, and Kaiser and Somatus are on North Washington Street. Tell us the entrance, and if a rider in a wheelchair has steps at home, a stair chair team adds $75 each way.

Dialysis and standing orders

Falls Church, Seven Corners and Baileys Crossroads riders travel with us to centers including:

  • Somatus Dialysis Center – Falls Church, 500 N. Washington St, Falls Church
  • U.S. Renal Care Falls Church, 6541 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church
  • DaVita Annandale Dialysis, 7060 Columbia Pike, Annandale
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Fairfax, 8316 Arlington Blvd, Ste 108, Fairfax
  • DaVita Fairfax Dialysis Center, 8501 Arlington Blvd, Fairfax
  • DaVita Tyson’s Corner Dialysis, 8391 Old Courthouse Rd, Vienna

Somatus in the City runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday only, so its chair times all fall on those days. Three of the other centers line Route 50 west of Seven Corners, where the service roads and limited U-turns make the approach direction matter. Give us the chair times once and the schedule stays on our books, with a will-call return if treatment runs long. If you or the clinic can call a little before you’re done, we’ll start a driver your way. The earlier the call, the shorter the wait. See dialysis transportation for details.

Booking, coverage and payment

Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889, or you can request a trip online. We need a minimum of three hours notice for same-day requests and discharges; booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability. Cancel or change at least two hours before pickup to avoid a fee.

Rates. Wheelchair trips start at $55 per leg on a round trip and stretcher trips at $230 per leg, the same published rates everywhere we drive. The full card is on our rates page, and we quote every trip before you book.

Virginia Medicaid. If the rider is a Virginia Medicaid member and the trip is to a covered medical service, the ride should cost them nothing, and it is not booked directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide explains who qualifies and how far ahead to call.

Medicare, private pay and facilities. Original Medicare does not cover wheelchair or stretcher vans; some Medicare Advantage plans include a transportation benefit, and if yours does, ask the plan for H&M Transport by name (see does Medicare cover wheelchair transportation). Families pay the published rates, with no doctor’s order needed. Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates through our facilities program.

Questions we get from Falls Church families

How much does medical transportation cost in Falls Church?

A wheelchair or ambulatory round trip is $55 per leg with five miles included each way, then $3.00 per additional mile. A one-way trip or discharge is $90 plus $3.00 per mile. Stretcher trips are $230 per leg on a round trip, or $260 plus $4.00 per mile one way.

Does Virginia Medicaid cover rides from Falls Church?

My address says Falls Church but I live in Fairfax County. Do you serve it?

Yes. We pick up in the City of Falls Church and in the county areas that share the name, including Seven Corners, Baileys Crossroads, Idylwood and West Falls Church, at the same rates.

Can you pick up a discharge at Inova Fairfax Hospital?

Yes, with at least three hours notice. Tell us the building and unit, since different garages serve different parts of the campus, and the driver comes to the unit.

Can you take me from Falls Church into DC or Maryland?

Yes. We hold WMATC authority 3449, which covers trips between Northern Virginia, the District and the Maryland suburbs, at the same rates.

How far ahead should I book?

Three hours is our minimum for same-day trips and discharges. Booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability, and dialysis or therapy riders can set up a standing order.

What we can’t take

H&M Transport runs non-emergency medical transportation. There is no medical care or monitoring on board, we do not take anyone to an emergency room, and we do not move patients between hospitals for a higher level of care. We do run scheduled, stable transfers between facilities, such as hospital to rehab or to a nursing home. If this is a medical emergency, call 911.

Where our drivers start the day

Dispatch sits in Gainesville. The vehicles do not. Our drivers take their vans home, and they live across the whole service area, including the Maryland suburbs and the District. The van that pulls up at your door in Falls Church has usually started its day nearby rather than driving across the region to reach you.

That is why a same-day request is often a shorter wait than a map would suggest, and why a standing order holds week after week: the same driver, starting from the same place, on a route they already know.
