Non-Emergency Medical Transportation in Tysons, VA

When someone in your family has a medical appointment in Tysons and a car will not do, because they ride in a wheelchair, need a steady arm from the door, or are leaving a hospital and have to travel lying down, we send the right vehicle and a driver who stays with them door-through-door. We have driven Northern Virginia riders for about 16 years, and we were the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation.

We pick up across Tysons, McLean, Vienna, Merrifield and Dunn Loring, from the high-rise towers on Westpark Drive to houses off Old Dominion Drive. Tysons sits inside the Washington Metropolitan District, so under WMATC authority 3449 a pickup here can go to an appointment in DC or the Maryland suburbs and back on one booking. Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889, or you can request a trip online.

Where we take Tysons riders

Our most common destination from Tysons, Vienna and Merrifield is the Inova Fairfax Hospital campus at 3300 Gallows Road. The mailing address says Falls Church, but the campus is in Merrifield, in Fairfax County, a straight run down Gallows Road from Tysons. It also holds Inova Women’s Hospital, Inova L.J. Murphy Children’s Hospital and Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, and each part of the campus has its own garage. The Blue Garage, entered from Gallows Road by Blue Road, serves the Professional Services Building and the Surgery Center. The Green and Gray garages, off Woodburn Road and Wellness Boulevard, serve the North and South Towers, Women’s, Children’s and Schar Heart and Vascular. Inova lets riders with limited mobility be dropped at the main entrances, so send us the building and unit from the paperwork and the driver goes to the right door. We never use the emergency entrance.

Close by on Innovation Park Drive, Inova Schar Cancer at 8081 Innovation Park Drive is part of the Inova Center for Personalized Health campus, where patient parking is free in Garage A (Purple) and Garage B (Orange). For chemotherapy and other treatment visits we bring the rider to the door and come back when the session ends.

In Tysons itself, Kaiser Permanente Tysons Corner Medical Center at 8008 Westpark Drive is an outpatient center for Kaiser members, with cardiology, orthopedics, nephrology, radiology, lab and pharmacy. It is not a hospital, and Kaiser states that emergency care is not available there. For McLean families, VHC Health in Arlington is the other nearby hospital; its Outpatient Pavilion at 1851 N. George Mason Drive, home to imaging, endoscopy, lab and outpatient rehab, uses the Purple Garage in Zone E.

We also serve residents of The Mather on Westpark Drive, Vinson Hall Retirement Community on Old Dominion Drive, Sunrise of McLean Village on Chain Bridge Road, Sunrise of McLean on Turning Leaf Lane and Chesterbrook Residences on Westmoreland Street. For rehab stays we run discharges and appointments to and from August Healthcare at Iliff in Dunn Loring, formerly Iliff Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and The Boulevard Post Acute on Arlington Boulevard.

Choosing your level of service

Four options, and the right one depends on how your rider moves rather than how far they are going.

Ambulatory is for someone who can walk to and from the vehicle, with a steadying arm if needed. Ambulatory riders travel in the same minivans and full-size vans as the rest of the fleet, and the driver assists at the door and again at the destination. If the rider can manage the steps with the driver’s help, stairs cost nothing extra.

Wheelchair is for a rider who stays in their chair for the trip. The chair goes up a ramp on our minivans or a hydraulic lift on our full-size vans, and it is secured at four points before the vehicle moves. You do not need to own a wheelchair; we can bring one. See wheelchair transportation in Tysons for prices and details.

Stretcher is for a rider who cannot sit upright safely for the journey, often after surgery or on discharge to a rehab or skilled nursing facility. Two crew members run every stretcher trip, bed to bed. See stretcher transportation.

Bariatric is for riders over 300 lbs. We use specialized vehicles with wider ramps and roomier interiors, and add a second crew member when the transfer or the route out of the home calls for it. Give us as much notice as you can.

If you are not sure which applies, call and describe the situation. The right vehicle at the door matters more than almost anything else about the booking.

Pickup in Tysons, McLean and Vienna

  • High-rise towers. Much of the newer senior housing in Tysons is in towers with garages and porte-cocheres. The Mather at 7929 Westpark Drive has a north and a south tower, so tell us which one and the door or porte-cochere where we should meet the rider.
  • Westpark Drive access. The 495 Express Lanes connect directly at Westpark Drive, which puts Kaiser Tysons Corner and The Mather a few minutes off the Beltway. The Jones Branch Connector links Route 123 near the McLean Metro station to Jones Branch Drive.
  • Campuses with several buildings. Vinson Hall has independent living, assisted living, the Arleigh Burke Pavilion for nursing and rehab, and The Sylvestery for memory care. Name the building and the entrance when you book.
  • Gallows Road to Inova Fairfax. Gallows Road runs from Tysons past Dunn Loring to the Inova campus, and it is slow near the Beltway and Route 50 at peak hours. We build that into the pickup time.

Dialysis and standing orders

Tysons, McLean, Vienna and Merrifield riders travel with us to centers including:

  • DaVita Tyson’s Corner Dialysis, 8391 Old Courthouse Rd, Vienna
  • DaVita McLean Dialysis, 8605 Westwood Center Dr, Vienna
  • DaVita Fairfax Dialysis Center, 8501 Arlington Blvd, Fairfax
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Fairfax, 8316 Arlington Blvd, Ste 108, Fairfax
  • U.S. Renal Care Falls Church, 6541 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church

Both DaVita centers are close to Route 7 on the Vienna side of Tysons, and the other three sit along Route 50 near the Beltway. Give us the center and chair times one time and the schedule stays on our books, three days a week, with a will-call return if treatment runs long. If you or the clinic can call a little before you’re done, we’ll start a driver your way. The earlier the call, the shorter the wait. Riders usually see the same driver from week to week. See dialysis transportation for details.

Booking, coverage and payment

Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889, or you can request a trip online. We need a minimum of three hours notice for same-day requests and discharges; booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability. Cancel or change at least two hours before pickup to avoid a fee.

Rates. Wheelchair trips start at $55 per leg on a round trip and stretcher trips at $230 per leg, the same published rates everywhere we drive. The full card is on our rates page, and we quote every trip before you book.

Virginia Medicaid. If the rider is a Virginia Medicaid member and the trip is to a covered medical service, the ride should cost them nothing, and it is not booked directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide explains who qualifies and how far ahead to call.

Medicare, private pay and facilities. Original Medicare does not cover wheelchair or stretcher vans; some Medicare Advantage plans include a transportation benefit, and if yours does, ask the plan for H&M Transport by name (see does Medicare cover wheelchair transportation). Families pay the published rates, with no doctor’s order needed. Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates through our facilities program.

Questions we get from Tysons families

How much does medical transportation cost in Tysons?

A wheelchair or ambulatory round trip is $55 per leg with five miles included each way, then $3.00 per additional mile. A one-way trip or discharge is $90 plus $3.00 per mile. Stretcher trips are $230 per leg on a round trip, or $260 plus $4.00 per mile one way.

Does Virginia Medicaid cover rides from Tysons?

Yes, for covered medical trips, and the ride is not booked directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Can you pick up a discharge at Inova Fairfax Hospital?

Yes, with at least three hours notice. Tell us the building and unit, because the Blue, Green and Gray garages serve different parts of the campus, and the driver comes to the unit to meet the rider.

Can you take me from Tysons into DC or Maryland?

Yes. We hold WMATC authority 3449, which covers trips between Northern Virginia, the District and the Maryland suburbs, at the same rates.

Do you pick up at The Mather?

Yes. The Mather has two towers at 7929 Westpark Drive, so tell us the tower and the door or porte-cochere where the rider will be ready.

How far ahead should I book?

Three hours is our minimum for same-day trips and discharges. Booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability, and dialysis or therapy riders can set up a standing order.

What we can’t take

H&M Transport runs non-emergency medical transportation. There is no medical care or monitoring on board, we do not take anyone to an emergency room, and we do not move patients between hospitals for a higher level of care. We do run scheduled, stable transfers between facilities, such as hospital to rehab or to a nursing home. If this is a medical emergency, call 911.

Where our drivers start the day

Dispatch sits in Gainesville. The vehicles do not. Our drivers take their vans home, and they live across the whole service area, including the Maryland suburbs and the District. The van that pulls up at your door in Tysons has usually started its day nearby rather than driving across the region to reach you.

That is why a same-day request is often a shorter wait than a map would suggest, and why a standing order holds week after week: the same driver, starting from the same place, on a route they already know.
