Wheelchair Transportation in Tysons, VA

Most wheelchair trips from Tysons go down Gallows Road to the Inova Fairfax campus, over to a dialysis chair in Vienna, or across Westpark Drive to Kaiser. The driver comes up to the apartment or the facility room, brings the rider down in their chair, secures it in the van and walks them in to the check-in desk at the other end.

We pick up across Tysons, McLean, Vienna, Merrifield and Dunn Loring, and cross into DC and the Maryland suburbs at the same rates under WMATC authority 3449. Wheelchair trips start at $55 per leg on a round trip. Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889, or you can request a trip online. For stretcher and ambulatory service, see our Tysons medical transportation page.

What our wheelchair service includes in Tysons

Every trip is door-through-door. The driver comes to the door of the home, the apartment or the facility room, helps the rider out, and at the other end takes them inside to the check-in desk or the dialysis chair rather than leaving them at the curb.

  • The rider stays in the chair. The chair goes up a ramp on our minivans or a hydraulic lift on our full-size vans, is strapped to the floor at four points, and the rider wears a lap and shoulder belt. Nobody is lifted into a car seat.
  • Your chair or ours. We secure manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs and scooters. If the rider does not own a suitable chair, we bring one at no extra cost.
  • Trained, screened drivers. Drivers are trained in passenger assistance and wheelchair securement, and every employee passes a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • A companion seat. A family member or caregiver can usually ride along; tell us when you book.
  • Accredited. H&M Transport was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation, which audits driver training, securement procedure and vehicle standards.

Where we take wheelchair riders from Tysons

The Inova Fairfax Hospital campus at 3300 Gallows Road carries a Falls Church mailing address but sits in Merrifield. It is a campus of several hospitals, and the garage depends on the building: the Blue Garage off Gallows Road for the Surgery Center and Professional Services Building, and the Green and Gray garages off Woodburn Road for the towers, Women’s, Children’s and Schar Heart and Vascular. Inova allows riders with limited mobility to be dropped at the main entrances, which is where we go in. Garage parking is $5 a day, so a drop-off at the door also saves the family the fee.

Inova Schar Cancer, at 8081 Innovation Park Drive off Gallows Road, has free patient parking in Garages A and B and weekday valet. Kaiser Permanente Tysons Corner Medical Center, at 8008 Westpark Drive, is an outpatient center for Kaiser members only, with no emergency department. McLean riders also go to VHC Health in Arlington, where the campus map marks pick-up and drop-off areas at the garages.

Among senior communities, we pick up at The Mather on Westpark Drive, Vinson Hall on Old Dominion Drive, both Sunrise communities in McLean and Chesterbrook Residences, and at August Healthcare at Iliff in Dunn Loring for rehab discharges and follow-up visits.

Dialysis rides from Tysons

We drive Tysons, McLean, Vienna and Merrifield riders to dialysis centers including:

  • DaVita Tyson’s Corner Dialysis, 8391 Old Courthouse Rd, Vienna
  • DaVita McLean Dialysis, 8605 Westwood Center Dr, Vienna
  • DaVita Fairfax Dialysis Center, 8501 Arlington Blvd, Fairfax
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Fairfax, 8316 Arlington Blvd, Ste 108, Fairfax
  • U.S. Renal Care Falls Church, 6541 Arlington Blvd, Falls Church

Set up the chair times once as a standing order and we keep them on the schedule, with a will-call pickup if a session runs over. If you or the clinic can call a little before you’re done, we’ll start a driver your way. The earlier the call, the shorter the wait. The ride home after treatment is when a rider is most tired, and a driver who knows them makes it easier.

Wheelchair van or Fastran, TOPS and MetroAccess?

Fairfax County has more public options than most, and each fits a different rider. MetroAccess is WMATA’s shared-ride, door-to-door paratransit; it needs a written application and an in-person interview, and trips must start and end within three-quarters of a mile of a bus or rail route. Fastran, the county’s human services transportation, carries residents who are referred and certified through a participating program such as a senior center; its Critical Medical Care Program covers dialysis, chemotherapy and therapy trips for income-eligible residents at a low fare. TOPS, which replaced Seniors On-The-Go! in 2021, gives eligible older adults and people with disabilities a debit card worth $100 in rides for $20, usable on taxis, Uber and Lyft, and Metro. Fairfax Connector buses cost $1.10 for seniors and riders with disabilities, but run fixed routes. For McLean residents 50 and over, the Shepherd’s Center of McLean-Arlington-Falls Church offers free volunteer rides in volunteers’ own cars, and NV Rides points Vienna riders to the Shepherd’s Center of Western Fairfax County.

A private wheelchair van covers what those are not built for: a same-day ride or a hospital discharge, a rider who stays in their chair and cannot transfer to a car seat, help from inside the home to the check-in desk, an exact appointment time, a trip into DC or Maryland, or a rider who has not been referred or certified.

Pickup tips for Tysons towers and McLean homes

  • Towers. The Mather has a north and a south tower at 7929 Westpark Drive. Tell us the tower and the door or porte-cochere, and the unit number.
  • Vinson Hall. The Arleigh Burke Pavilion, The Sylvestery and the independent living buildings each have their own entrance. Name the building when you book.
  • Steps at home. If a McLean or Vienna house has steps to the door, tell us the count. A stair chair team is $75 each way and is routine when we know ahead.
  • Inova Fairfax. Send the building and unit from the discharge paperwork so the driver heads for the right garage and entrance.

Who pays for a wheelchair ride in Tysons

Medicaid. If the rider is a Virginia Medicaid member and the trip is to a covered medical service, the ride should cost them nothing, and it is not booked directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Plan ahead: Medicaid transportation generally needs several business days’ notice for routine appointments.

Medicare. Original Medicare does not cover a wheelchair van. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a limited transportation benefit, usually a set number of trips a year; if yours does, book through the plan and ask for H&M Transport by name.

Private pay and facilities. Families booking directly pay the published rates above, and the quote is what you pay. Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates; see our facilities page.

Booking, notice and cancellations

  • Same-day requests: call (703) 304-7889 and speak with dispatch.
  • Notice: we need a minimum of three hours notice for same-day requests and discharges. Booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability.
  • Trip details: use the notes field for the entrance, the building or unit number, the appointment type, how long it should run, and the number of steps at the home.
  • Stairs: when a rider in a wheelchair has to go up or down steps, we send a stair chair team, which adds $75 each way.
  • Weight: for riders over 300 lbs, select bariatric service.
  • Changes and cancellations: cancel or change at least two hours before pickup to avoid a fee, by phone, by email at Reservations@hmtransport.com, or in our mobile app.

What a wheelchair van is not

This is non-emergency transportation. There is no medical care or monitoring on board, we do not take anyone to an emergency room, and we do not move patients between hospitals for a higher level of care. Those are ambulance trips. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If the rider cannot sit upright for the length of the trip, book stretcher transportation instead.
