Non-Emergency Medical Transportation in Reston, VA

If someone in your family needs to get to a medical appointment in Reston and a car will not do, because they use a wheelchair, need a steady hand from the front door, or are leaving the hospital and have to travel lying down, that is the ride we run. The driver comes to the door, helps the rider out, and walks them inside at the other end. We have done this for about 16 years, and we were the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation.

We pick up across Reston and Herndon, from North Reston and Lake Anne down to Hunters Woods and South Lakes, for ambulatory, wheelchair, stretcher and bariatric trips. Reston sits inside the Washington Metropolitan District, so under WMATC authority 3449 a Reston pickup can go to a DC or Maryland appointment and back on one booking. Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889, or you can request a trip online.

Where we take Reston riders

Reston Hospital Center at 1850 Town Center Parkway is the hospital most of our Reston riders use, and parking there is free. For inpatient pickups and discharges we go to the West Wing entrance, across from Garage A. For appointments in the medical office buildings we use the Pavilion I and II entrances, across from Garage B. The hospital also has a 30-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, so we run a steady flow of discharges from rehab back home.

For larger procedures, many riders go east to Inova Fairfax Hospital on Gallows Road. Patients with limited mobility can be dropped at the main entrances, and there is a Discharge Hospitality Suite on the ground floor near the Green Garage skywalk. South on the Fairfax County Parkway, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has free parking and separate main and emergency entrances; we use the main one. Inova Schar Cancer sits next door at 3650 Joseph Siewick Drive.

Herndon and Dulles-side riders also use StoneSprings Hospital Center on Stone Springs Boulevard, where the medical office building across the street connects to the hospital by an indoor walkway, and Inova Loudoun Hospital in Lansdowne.

Senior communities are a regular part of the schedule: Sunrise at Reston Town Center on Fountain Drive, Tall Oaks Assisted Living and Lake Anne House on North Shore Drive, Hunters Woods Fellowship House on Colts Neck Road, Brightview Dulles Corner at the Innovation Center Metro stop and Arbor Terrace Herndon. For short-term rehab we also pick up at Dulles Health & Rehab Center on Centreville Road.

Choosing your level of service

Four options, and the right one depends on how your rider moves rather than how far they are going.

Ambulatory is for someone who can walk to and from the vehicle, with a steadying arm if needed. Ambulatory riders travel in the same minivans and full-size vans as the rest of the fleet, and the driver assists at the door and again at the destination. If the rider can manage the steps with the driver’s help, stairs cost nothing extra.

Wheelchair is for a rider who stays in their chair for the trip. The chair goes up a ramp on our minivans or a hydraulic lift on our full-size vans, and it is secured at four points before the vehicle moves. You do not need to own a wheelchair; we can bring one. See wheelchair transportation in Reston for prices and details.

Stretcher is for a rider who cannot sit upright safely for the journey, often after surgery or on discharge to a rehab or skilled nursing facility. Two crew members run every stretcher trip, bed to bed. See stretcher transportation.

Bariatric is for riders over 300 lbs. We use specialized vehicles with wider ramps and roomier interiors, and add a second crew member when the transfer or the route out of the home calls for it. Give us as much notice as you can.

If you are not sure which applies, call and describe the situation. The right vehicle at the door matters more than almost anything else about the booking.

Pickup tips for Reston and Herndon

  • Cluster townhouses. Many Reston clusters have private streets and shared parking courts, and the front door can be down a pathway rather than at the curb. Tell us where a van can stop and how far it is to the door, and we allow the time.
  • Gate or access codes. If your cluster or condo building needs a code, put it in the booking notes so the driver is not waiting at the entrance.
  • Crossing the Toll Road. The Dulles Toll Road, the airport road and the Silver Line split Reston north and south, and only a few overpasses cross it: Reston Parkway, Wiehle Avenue, the Fairfax County Parkway and Centreville Road. We plan the route around them.
  • Route 7. Leesburg Pike is now six lanes from Reston Avenue to Tysons, which helps on trips toward Tysons and Inova Fairfax. It still carries heavy traffic, and we build rush hour into the pickup time.

Dialysis rides from Reston and Herndon

We run standing dialysis schedules for Reston and Herndon riders, including to:

  • U.S. Renal Care Reston, 12330 Pinecrest Rd, Suite 200, Reston
  • Legacy Dialysis of Reston, 1897 Preston White Dr, Suite 105, Reston
  • DaVita Reston Dialysis Center, 530 Huntmar Park Dr, Suite D, Herndon
  • DaVita Chantilly Dialysis, 14225 Sullyfield Cir, Suite A, Chantilly
  • DaVita Tyson’s Corner Dialysis, 8391 Old Courthouse Rd, Suite 160, Vienna
  • DaVita CDC Sterling Dialysis, 46396 Benedict Dr, Suite 100, Sterling

Note that DaVita Reston is actually in Herndon, at Huntmar Park near the Fairfax County Parkway, so give us the street address when you book. Tell us the center and the chair times once and the three-day schedule stays on our books without rebooking. The same drivers tend to see the same riders, which matters most on the ride home after treatment. See dialysis transportation for details.

Booking, coverage and payment

Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889, or you can request a trip online. We need a minimum of three hours notice for same-day requests and discharges; booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability. Cancel or change at least two hours before pickup to avoid a fee.

Rates. Wheelchair trips start at $55 per leg on a round trip and stretcher trips at $230 per leg, the same published rates everywhere we drive. The full card is on our rates page, and we quote every trip before you book.

Virginia Medicaid. If the rider is a Virginia Medicaid member and the trip is to a covered medical service, the ride should cost them nothing, and it is not booked directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide explains who qualifies and how far ahead to call.

Medicare, private pay and facilities. Original Medicare does not cover wheelchair or stretcher vans; some Medicare Advantage plans include a transportation benefit, and if yours does, ask the plan for H&M Transport by name (see does Medicare cover wheelchair transportation). Families pay the published rates, with no doctor’s order needed. Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates through our facilities program.

Do you pick up discharges at Reston Hospital Center?

Yes, with at least three hours notice. For inpatient discharges we go to the West Wing entrance across from Garage A; tell us the unit and room.

Can you take me from Reston into DC or Maryland?

Yes. We hold WMATC authority 3449, which covers trips between Northern Virginia, the District and the Maryland suburbs, at the same rates.

Do you pick up in Reston cluster communities?

Yes. Tell us where a van can stop, how far it is to the door and any gate or access code, and the driver comes to the door rather than waiting at the curb.

Are you accredited?

Yes. H&M Transport was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation, which audits driver training, securement procedure and vehicle standards.

What we can’t take

H&M Transport runs non-emergency medical transportation. There is no medical care or monitoring on board, we do not take anyone to an emergency room, and we do not move patients between hospitals for a higher level of care. We do run scheduled, stable transfers between facilities, such as hospital to rehab or to a nursing home. If this is a medical emergency, call 911.

Where our drivers start the day

Dispatch sits in Gainesville. The vehicles do not. Our drivers take their vans home, and they live across the whole service area, including the Maryland suburbs and the District. The van that pulls up at your door in Reston has usually started its day nearby rather than driving across the region to reach you.

That is why a same-day request is often a shorter wait than a map would suggest, and why a standing order holds week after week: the same driver, starting from the same place, on a route they already know.
