Non-Emergency Medical Transportation in Sterling, VA

If someone in your family needs a ride to a medical appointment in Sterling and a car won’t work, because they use a wheelchair, need help from the front door, or are coming home from a hospital stay lying down, that is the ride we run. The driver comes to the door, helps the rider into the van and takes them inside at the other end. H&M Transport was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation.

We pick up across Sterling, Dulles, Cascades, Potomac Falls and CountrySide for ambulatory, wheelchair, stretcher and bariatric trips. A Sterling pickup can go to an appointment in DC, Montgomery County or Prince George’s County and back on one booking under WMATC authority 3449, with our Virginia DMV Certificate #524 covering the Virginia side. Dispatch answers (703) 304-7889 around the clock, or you can request a trip online.

Where we take Sterling riders

StoneSprings Hospital Center at 24440 Stone Springs Boulevard carries a Sterling address, but it sits south of Dulles Airport in the Stone Ridge area, well away from the Route 7 side of town. We allow for the drive down Route 28 or the Loudoun County Parkway. The five-story medical office building across the street, listed under a Dulles address at 24430, connects to the hospital by an indoor walkway, so we can drop an office patient at either building.

Up Route 7 in Lansdowne, Inova Loudoun Hospital has free parking in the North Garage and the North and South surface lots. It offers inpatient rehabilitation, so we handle many discharges from there to home or to a nursing facility. East of Sterling, Reston Hospital Center on Town Center Parkway has its own 30-bed inpatient rehab unit; we use the West Wing entrance for inpatient pickups and the Pavilion entrances for office visits. For larger procedures, riders also go to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where there is a Discharge Hospitality Suite near the Green Garage skywalk.

Senior and rehab communities are a steady part of the Sterling schedule. We pick up at Potomac Falls Health & Rehab Center and Cascades Village on Route 7, at Sunrise at Countryside on Jona Drive, and at Falcons Landing and its Johnson Center in Potomac Falls. Nearby, we also serve Dulles Health & Rehab Center on Centreville Road in Herndon and Ashby Ponds in Ashburn.

Which van a Sterling trip needs

We go by how the rider moves on the day, not by the distance to StoneSprings or Reston.

Ambulatory. For a rider who walks with a steadying arm, in the same minivans and full-size vans as the rest of the fleet. The driver helps at both doors, and if the rider manages the steps with that help, stairs cost nothing extra.

Wheelchair. The rider stays in the chair, rolled up a minivan ramp or onto a full-size van lift and held at four points before we move. No chair? We bring one. Prices are on wheelchair transportation in Sterling.

Stretcher. For a rider who can’t sit up safely, often after surgery or on discharge to rehab or skilled nursing. Two crew members run each trip, bed to bed; see stretcher transportation.

Bariatric. For riders over 300 lbs, in vehicles with wider ramps and roomier interiors, with a second crew member when the transfer or the way out of the house calls for it. Book as early as you can.

If you’re unsure which applies, describe the rider to dispatch and we’ll pick the vehicle with you before it’s sent.

Pickup tips for Sterling and Potomac Falls

  • CountrySide and Cascades. These large planned communities along the Potomac have many townhouse sections with shared parking. Tell us where a van can stop and how far it is to the door.
  • Route 7 frontage. Potomac Falls Health & Rehab and Cascades Village face Route 7 directly, so whether the van can turn in depends on its direction. Route 7 carries heavy traffic through Sterling, and we build that into the pickup time.
  • Falcons Landing has two addresses. The main community is on Falcons Landing Circle, and the Johnson Center for skilled nursing and rehab is on Earhart Place. Tell us which building.
  • StoneSprings is a drive. From the Route 7 side of Sterling, the hospital is a Route 28 or Loudoun County Parkway trip south. Allow for it when you pick the appointment time.

Dialysis rides from Sterling

We run standing dialysis schedules for Sterling, Potomac Falls and Dulles riders, including to:

  • DaVita CDC Sterling Dialysis, 46396 Benedict Dr, Suite 100, Sterling
  • DaVita Ashburn Dialysis, 19980 Highland Vista Dr, Suite 100, Ashburn
  • DaVita Lansdowne Dialysis, 44084 Riverside Pkwy, Suite 100, Leesburg
  • Pure Life Renal of Lansdowne, 19490 Sandridge Way, Suite 140, Leesburg
  • DaVita Stone Ridge Dialysis, 24640 Southpoint Dr, Suite 160, Chantilly
  • DaVita Reston Dialysis Center, 530 Huntmar Park Dr, Suite D, Herndon
  • U.S. Renal Care Reston, 12330 Pinecrest Rd, Suite 200, Reston

Two names can mislead: DaVita Stone Ridge is in Loudoun County near StoneSprings despite its Chantilly address, and DaVita Reston is in Herndon. Tell us the center and chair times once and the three-day schedule stays on our books. If a session runs long, call for a will-call ride home and a driver reaches the center within 45 minutes. The same drivers tend to see the same riders, which helps on the tired ride home. See dialysis transportation for details.

Booking, coverage and payment

Book by phone at (703) 304-7889, day or night, or request a trip online. Sterling pickups on the same day, discharges from StoneSprings included, need three hours’ notice; reserve the day before and the ride is guaranteed. You’ll hear from us by call or text within two hours. There is no fee for changes more than two hours before pickup; inside that window, or for a no-show, it is $50.

Rates. Wheelchair and ambulatory round trips are $55 a leg with five miles included each way, and stretcher round trips are $230 a leg. A rider in a wheelchair who has to come down steps needs our stair chair team, $75 each way. We quote every trip before you book, and the full card is on our rates page.

Virginia Medicaid. A Sterling, Potomac Falls or Dulles member with a covered appointment, a chair at DaVita CDC Sterling or a visit to Reston Hospital Center, pays nothing for the ride, though our dispatch is not where it gets booked. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide explains who qualifies and how far ahead to call.

Medicare, private pay and facilities. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for these vans, but a Medicare Advantage plan whose ride benefit runs through MTM Health or SafeRide Health can send the trip to us. Ask the plan for H&M Transport by name (see does Medicare cover wheelchair transportation). Families pay the rate card with no doctor’s order needed, and hospitals, nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates through our facilities program.

Questions we get from Sterling families

How does Medicaid work for a Sterling ride?

Covered medical visits are free to the member, and that includes the three-day schedule at DaVita Stone Ridge or U.S. Renal Care Reston. Start with Medicaid; it sends the ride to a provider. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Yes, with three hours’ notice. Tell us the unit, and whether the rider is in the hospital or the medical office building across the street.

Can you take me from Sterling into DC or Maryland?

Yes. Trips from Loudoun County into the District and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties run under WMATC authority 3449, with Virginia DMV Certificate #524 for the Virginia end.

Do you serve Falcons Landing?

Yes. Tell us whether the pickup is at the main community on Falcons Landing Circle or at the Johnson Center on Earhart Place, and the driver goes to that building.

Are you accredited?

Yes. H&M Transport was Virginia’s first NEMTAC-accredited NEMT provider; the review covers driver training, securement procedure and vehicle standards.

What we can’t take

H&M Transport runs non-emergency medical transportation. Nothing medical happens on board: we don’t take anyone to an emergency room or move patients between hospitals for a higher level of care. We do run scheduled transfers for stable patients, such as hospital to rehab or a nursing home. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911. If this is a medical emergency, call 911.

Drivers who start near Sterling

Dispatch sits in Gainesville, but the vans don’t. Drivers take them home, and they live across the whole service area, so the van at your door in Sterling has usually started its day nearby.

That’s why a same-day request is often covered sooner than the map suggests, and why a standing order tends to keep the same driver on a route they already know.
