Getting to Inova Fair Oaks

Fair Oaks sits in a dense cluster of medical and senior facilities: the hospital, Fair Oaks Health & Rehabilitation, Brightview Fair Oaks and Sunrise at Fair Oaks are all within a few minutes of each other. A crew running one trip in that cluster often has another on the same loop, which in practice often shortens the wait for a same-day request here.

We also have drivers staged on this side of the county, which tends to show up as a quicker response on a short-notice booking.

Route 50 and the Fairfax County Parkway are the corridors to plan around. A morning appointment means an earlier departure than the mileage suggests.

Discharge from Inova Fair Oaks

Fair Oaks trips come in two forms.

Discharges. A patient leaving Fair Oaks goes home to Chantilly, Centreville or South Riding, or into a nearby rehab or senior community.

Scheduled arrivals. Riders brought in for an appointment, imaging, an infusion or an outpatient procedure and taken home after.

Rides to the emergency room, and moves to another hospital for a higher level of care, are ambulance trips.

Facilities get three hours’ notice as the same-day minimum, stretcher included, and changes are free more than two hours before pickup.

Fair Oaks discharges many patients into the surrounding rehab and senior communities, and many more back to single-family and townhouse addresses in Chantilly, Centreville and South Riding. Those townhouse developments are where crews tend to lose time: rear-loading garages, front doors on a common walk, and GPS that puts a driver on the wrong side of the block.

Give us the unit number and say which side to come to. It is worth fifteen seconds at booking.

Choosing the van for a Fair Oaks trip

It’s set by how the rider moves that day, whether home is a townhouse in South Riding or a room at Brightview.

Ambulatory — for a rider who walks with a steadying arm; the driver meets them at the front door, not the garage, and walks them in.
Wheelchair transportation — the rider stays seated, loaded by ramp or lift and secured at four points before the van moves; we can provide a chair.
Stretcher — for a patient who can’t sit up safely, such as a discharge to Fair Oaks Health & Rehabilitation; two crew members on each trip.
Bariatric — riders over 300 pounds get rated equipment and a second crew member. With fewer of these vans, early notice helps.

Not sure which applies? Describe the rider and the townhouse layout to dispatch, and we’ll pick the vehicle with you first.

Booking a Fair Oaks ride

Call (703) 304-7889 at any hour. We ask three hours’ lead time for a same-day ride or a Fair Oaks discharge, anything booked the previous day is guaranteed, and a call or text confirms it within two hours. Rescheduling is free more than two hours before pickup; a later change or a no-show costs $50.

Rates and coverage. From a Centreville or Fair Lakes address, a wheelchair or ambulatory round trip to Fair Oaks is $55 a leg with the first five miles each way included, then $3 a mile; a one-way discharge home is $90 plus $3 a mile; a stretcher round trip is $230 a leg. Check any trip on our published rate card and estimator. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for these vans, but a Medicare Advantage plan whose ride benefit runs through MTM Health or SafeRide Health can send the trip to us. Medicaid members book through the plan. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Fair Oaks trips that need an ambulance

We drive western Fairfax riders to scheduled care and home again; the van is transport, never treatment.

A Fair Oaks rider who needs monitoring, an emergency room or a transfer to another hospital for a higher level of care needs an ambulance, not our van. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.

If this is a medical emergency, call 911.

If you’re not sure which you need, call and tell us the situation; when it’s an ambulance trip, we’ll say so.

Common questions

How quickly can you get to Inova Fair Oaks on short notice?

Drivers staged on this side of the county mean short-notice bookings often see a quicker response. Same-day rides and discharges need three hours’ notice.

Do you take patients from Fair Oaks to nearby rehab and senior communities?

Yes. Fair Oaks Health & Rehabilitation, Brightview Fair Oaks and Sunrise at Fair Oaks are all within a few minutes of the hospital. Fair Oaks discharges many patients into communities like these.

What should I tell you for a ride home from Fair Oaks to a townhouse in Chantilly, Centreville or South Riding?

Give us the unit number and say which side to come to. Rear-loading garages and front doors on a common walk are where crews tend to lose time.

How early should I plan for a morning appointment at Inova Fair Oaks?

Route 50 and the Fairfax County Parkway are the corridors to plan around. A morning appointment means an earlier departure than the mileage suggests.

What if a Fair Oaks appointment runs long?

Make the ride home a will-call. Call dispatch near the end of the visit and a driver starts toward Joseph Siewick Drive; call when you’re ready and a driver reaches you within 45 minutes. Prescheduled wait time is $75 an hour for wheelchair trips and $100 an hour for stretcher.

Can you transport a Fair Oaks patient on isolation precautions?

Yes, with notice: tell us about C. diff, MRSA, COVID or other precautions when you book. The crew wears what the precautions require, the van is disinfected afterwards, and an added charge is quoted by dispatch.

Does Virginia Medicaid cover rides to Inova Fair Oaks?

Yes. A covered visit to Joseph Siewick Drive is free to a western Fairfax member, and the trip is set up through Medicaid rather than through us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.
