Wheelchair Transportation in Alexandria, VA

Alexandria covers a lot of ground for a small city: Old Town rowhouses with steps at the front door, West End high-rises, and a southern stretch along Route 1 that is really Fairfax County with an Alexandria address. A wheelchair ride has to work in all of it. Our drivers come to the door, bring the rider down in their own chair or ours, secure the chair in the van, and take them inside at the other end.

We run wheelchair transportation across the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria-addressed parts of Fairfax County, including Kingstowne, Franconia, Huntington and the Route 1 corridor. Trips start at $55 per leg on a round trip. To book, request a trip online or call (703) 304-7889. For stretcher and ambulatory service, see our Alexandria medical transportation page.

What our wheelchair service includes in Alexandria

Every trip is door-through-door. The driver comes to the door of the home, the apartment or the facility room, helps the rider out, and at the other end takes them inside to the check-in desk or the dialysis chair rather than leaving them at the curb.

  • The rider stays in the chair. The chair goes up a ramp on our minivans or a hydraulic lift on our full-size vans, is strapped to the floor at four points, and the rider wears a lap and shoulder belt. Nobody is lifted into a car seat.
  • Your chair or ours. We secure manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs and scooters. If the rider does not own a suitable chair, we bring one at no extra cost.
  • Trained, screened drivers. Drivers are trained in passenger assistance and wheelchair securement, and every employee passes a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • A companion seat. A family member or caregiver can usually ride along; tell us when you book.
  • Accredited. H&M Transport was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation, which audits driver training, securement procedure and vehicle standards.

Where we take wheelchair riders in Alexandria

Inova Alexandria Hospital on Seminary Road at North Howard Street is the city’s hospital and our most frequent stop here. The campus has separate emergency, surgery and patient and visitor entrances, with the Casey Health Center and the Health & Education Center on site, so tell us the building when you book. Inova plans to move the hospital to the former Landmark Mall site, with opening scheduled for 2028; until then, Seminary Road it is.

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital on Parkers Lane serves the southern end, with free parking in its blue, green and yellow lots. Kaiser Permanente’s Alexandria medical center at 3000 Potomac Avenue in Potomac Yard is a frequent outpatient stop, open weekdays with a member parking garage.

Riders going to Fort Belvoir Community Hospital should know it is on a military installation. A rider with a Defense Department ID can go straight in; a visitor without one needs a sponsored pass arranged in advance, so tell us when you book and we will plan the trip around it.

Dialysis rides in Alexandria

Alexandria riders have several centers to choose from, and we drive to all of them on standing schedules:

  • DaVita Alexandria Dialysis, 5150 Duke St
  • Fresenius Kidney Care’s Alexandria Kidney Center, 4141 Duke St
  • NOVA Dialysis Woodbine, 2729 King St
  • DaVita Franconia Dialysis Center, 5695 King Centre Dr, in Kingstowne
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Fort Belvoir, 8796 Sacramento Dr, which is off post on the Route 1 side
  • Somatus Dialysis of Mount Vernon, in the Inova Mount Vernon Hospital building on Parkers Lane

A standing order keeps the three-day schedule on our books without rebooking each week, and the same drivers tend to see the same riders.

Wheelchair transportation prices in Alexandria

Every trip is a pick-up fee plus mileage, and the rates are the same everywhere we drive. These are our 2026 private-pay rates.

Trip type Pick-up fee Included miles Per mile after
Round trip $55 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
One way or discharge $90 None $3.00
Bariatric round trip (300 lb+) $100 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
Bariatric one way (300 lb+) $130 None $3.00
Long distance (50+ miles) $175 None $4.50

A ten-mile round trip is $55 plus five extra miles at $3.00 on each leg, so $70 each way and $140 in total. The same ten miles one way, such as a discharge home, is $90 plus $30, so $120. Most trips inside Alexandria are short enough that a round trip stays close to $110, because five miles are included on each leg.

Add-ons, named up front. Stair chair team, $75 each way, when the rider cannot manage steps. After hours (before 7am or after 6pm), $30. Prescheduled wait time, $75 per hour. Additional stop, $20. Oxygen, $35 per 2L tank. Credit card processing, 3%. We quote the trip before you book, and the full rate card is on our rates page.

Wheelchair van or DOT Paratransit and MetroAccess?

The City of Alexandria runs its own ADA paratransit service, DOT Paratransit, for residents and visitors who cannot use fixed-route transit because of a disability. Riders apply to the city’s paratransit coordinator, trips are booked by 5 p.m. the day before, service is curb-to-curb, and fares are set by zone, with trips inside the city free. It covers Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Falls Church and DC. MetroAccess also serves Alexandria, with its own application and assessment, advance booking and 30-minute pickup window.

Those services are the right choice for many planned trips. A private wheelchair van is built for the rest: a same-day ride or discharge, help from inside the home to the check-in desk, an exact appointment time, a trip into Maryland, or a rider who has not been certified.

Pickup tips for Alexandria homes and buildings

  • Old Town rowhouses often have steps straight onto a narrow brick sidewalk, and parking is tight. Tell us the step count and whether there is an alley or rear entrance; a stair chair team is routine when we know ahead.
  • West End high-rises along Seminary Road, Van Dorn and Duke Street usually have a garage or side entrance that suits a van better than the front drive. Give us the entrance and unit.
  • Senior communities such as Goodwin House on Fillmore Avenue have a front desk and a set pickup point. Tell us the building and we will meet the rider there.
  • Route 1 and Kingstowne addresses may say Alexandria but sit in Fairfax County. It makes no difference to the price, but a cross street helps the driver.

Who pays for a wheelchair ride in Alexandria

Medicaid. If the rider is a Virginia Medicaid member and the trip is to a covered medical service, the ride should cost them nothing, and it is not booked directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. See our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide. Plan ahead: Medicaid transportation generally needs several business days’ notice for routine appointments.

Medicare. Original Medicare does not cover a wheelchair van. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a limited transportation benefit, usually a set number of trips a year; if yours does, book through the plan and ask for H&M Transport by name.

Private pay and facilities. Families booking directly pay the published rates above, and the quote is what you pay. Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates; see our facilities page.

Booking, notice and cancellations

  • Same-day requests: call (703) 304-7889 and speak with dispatch.
  • Notice: we need a minimum of three hours notice for same-day requests and discharges. Booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability.
  • Trip details: use the notes field for the entrance, the building or unit number, the appointment type, how long it should run, and the number of steps at the home.
  • Stairs: when a rider in a wheelchair has to go up or down steps, we send a stair chair team, which adds $75 each way.
  • Weight: for riders over 300 lbs, select bariatric service.
  • Changes and cancellations: cancel or change at least two hours before pickup to avoid a fee, by phone, by email at Reservations@hmtransport.com, or in our mobile app.

What a wheelchair van is not

This is non-emergency transportation. There is no medical care or monitoring on board, we do not take anyone to an emergency room, and we do not move patients between hospitals for a higher level of care. Those are ambulance trips. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If the rider cannot sit upright for the length of the trip, book stretcher transportation instead.
