Wheelchair Transportation in Springfield, VA

Springfield sits at the Mixing Bowl, where I-95, I-395 and the Beltway meet, and that puts a lot of hospitals within a short drive and a lot of traffic between them. For a rider who uses a wheelchair, what matters is a van the chair rolls into, a driver who comes to the door, and a pickup time that allows for the interchange. That is how we run wheelchair transportation here.

We pick up across Springfield, West Springfield, Franconia, Kingstowne, Newington, Lorton and Burke. Wheelchair trips start at $55 per leg on a round trip, and dispatch answers around the clock. To book, request a trip online or call (703) 304-7889. For stretcher and ambulatory service, see our Springfield medical transportation page.

What our wheelchair service includes in Springfield

Every trip is door-through-door. The driver comes to the door of the home, the apartment or the facility room, helps the rider out, and at the other end takes them inside to the check-in desk or the dialysis chair rather than leaving them at the curb.

  • The rider stays in the chair. The chair goes up a ramp on our minivans or a hydraulic lift on our full-size vans, is strapped to the floor at four points, and the rider wears a lap and shoulder belt. Nobody is lifted into a car seat.
  • Your chair or ours. We secure manual wheelchairs, power wheelchairs and scooters. If the rider does not own a suitable chair, we bring one at no extra cost.
  • Trained, screened drivers. Drivers are trained in passenger assistance and wheelchair securement, and every employee passes a criminal background check and drug screening.
  • A companion seat. A family member or caregiver can usually ride along; tell us when you book.
  • Accredited. H&M Transport was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation, which audits driver training, securement procedure and vehicle standards.

Where we take wheelchair riders in Springfield

The Inova HealthPlex on Walker Lane, near the Franconia-Springfield Metro station, is the medical campus closest to most Springfield riders, with the Inova Surgery Center – Franconia-Springfield in Suite 200, imaging, cardiology, orthopedics and physical therapy. Free valet is at the main entrance, and construction on the campus can slow parking, so we allow a few extra minutes. Inova plans a new 110-bed hospital connected to the HealthPlex, scheduled for late 2028.

For hospital care, Springfield riders go to Inova Alexandria Hospital on Seminary Road, a short run up I-395 with free parking in front and across Howard Street; to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where patients with limited mobility can be dropped at the main entrances and the Green Garage serves the main lobbies; and to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital on Parkers Lane.

We also run a regular schedule for residents of Greenspring on Spring Village Drive, a large gated senior community whose buildings are linked by glass-enclosed walkways, and Sunrise of Springfield on Franconia Road.

Dialysis rides in Springfield

Springfield riders are treated at centers on every side of the Mixing Bowl, and we run standing schedules to them:

  • DaVita Franconia Dialysis Center, 5695 King Centre Dr, Kingstowne
  • DaVita Annandale Dialysis, 7060 Columbia Pike
  • DaVita Alexandria Dialysis, 5150 Duke St
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Fort Belvoir, 8796 Sacramento Dr, for riders on the Route 1 and Lorton side

A standing order keeps the three-day schedule on our books without rebooking, and the same drivers tend to see the same riders. That consistency matters most on the ride home, when a rider coming off treatment may be tired and slower on the transfer.

Wheelchair transportation prices in Springfield

Every trip is a pick-up fee plus mileage, and the rates are the same everywhere we drive. These are our 2026 private-pay rates.

Trip type Pick-up fee Included miles Per mile after

A ten-mile round trip is $55 plus five extra miles at $3.00 on each leg, so $70 each way and $140 in total. The same ten miles one way, such as a discharge home, is $90 plus $30, so $120. A round trip from Springfield to Inova Alexandria Hospital, about six miles each way, is $58 per leg, or $116 in total.

Add-ons, named up front. Stair chair team, $75 each way, when the rider cannot manage steps. After hours (before 7am or after 6pm), $30. Prescheduled wait time, $75 per hour. Additional stop, $20. Oxygen, $35 per 2L tank. Credit card processing, 3%. We quote the trip before you book, and the full rate card is on our rates page.

Wheelchair van or MetroAccess, FASTRAN and TOPS?

Fairfax County residents have several public options, and for some trips they are the right choice. MetroAccess, Metro’s ADA paratransit service, serves Fairfax County for trips near Metro and bus routes. It requires an application and an in-person assessment, trips are booked a day or more ahead with no same-day service, rides are shared, and the pickup comes within a 30-minute window. Its Abilities-Ride option can move some booked MetroAccess trips to partner vehicles for a flat fare, but it is still curb-to-curb and not same-day.

Fairfax County’s FASTRAN carries residents certified through participating county programs, and its Critical Medical Care Program takes riders to dialysis, chemotherapy, radiation and physical therapy for an income-based fare, on a space-available basis. The county’s TOPS program, which replaced Seniors on the Go in 2021, subsidizes taxi and rideshare fares on a debit card for eligible older adults and people with disabilities; its waitlist closed in August 2025, so check current status with the county.

A private wheelchair van covers what those programs are not built for: a same-day ride or hospital discharge, help from inside the home to the check-in desk, an exact appointment time rather than a window, a trip into DC or Maryland, or a rider who has not been certified.

Pickup tips for Springfield homes

  • Split-levels and ramblers in West Springfield and Burke often have steps at both the front and the side. Tell us which entrance is level, or how many steps there are, and we bring a stair chair team if needed.
  • Townhouse communities in Kingstowne and Franconia usually have shared lots. Give us the nearest spot where a van can stop.
  • Senior communities. At Greenspring, tell us the building; the walkways between buildings mean the rider may be waiting in a different lobby from the one on the address.
  • The Mixing Bowl. Traffic on I-95 and I-395 is predictable. We build it into the pickup time rather than hoping for a light day.

Who pays for a wheelchair ride in Springfield

Medicaid. If the rider is a Virginia Medicaid member and the trip is to a covered medical service, the ride should cost them nothing, and it is not booked directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. See our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide. Plan ahead: Medicaid transportation generally needs several business days’ notice for routine appointments.

Medicare. Original Medicare does not cover a wheelchair van. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a limited transportation benefit, usually a set number of trips a year; if yours does, book through the plan and ask for H&M Transport by name.

Private pay and facilities. Families booking directly pay the published rates above, and the quote is what you pay. Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates; see our facilities page.

Booking, notice and cancellations

  • Same-day requests: call (703) 304-7889 and speak with dispatch.
  • Notice: we need a minimum of three hours notice for same-day requests and discharges. Booking 24 hours ahead guarantees availability.
  • Trip details: use the notes field for the entrance, the building or unit number, the appointment type, how long it should run, and the number of steps at the home.
  • Stairs: when a rider in a wheelchair has to go up or down steps, we send a stair chair team, which adds $75 each way.
  • Weight: for riders over 300 lbs, select bariatric service.
  • Changes and cancellations: cancel or change at least two hours before pickup to avoid a fee, by phone, by email at Reservations@hmtransport.com, or in our mobile app.

What a wheelchair van is not

This is non-emergency transportation. There is no medical care or monitoring on board, we do not take anyone to an emergency room, and we do not move patients between hospitals for a higher level of care. Those are ambulance trips. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If the rider cannot sit upright for the length of the trip, book stretcher transportation instead.
