Non-Emergency Medical Transportation in Lorton, VA

When a Lorton rider can’t manage an appointment by car, whether they use a wheelchair, need a steady hand from the front door or are coming home from Inova Mount Vernon lying down, we send the right vehicle and a driver who comes to the door and takes them inside at the other end. H&M Transport has run non-emergency medical rides since 2010 and was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn NEMTAC accreditation.

We pick up across Lorton, Laurel Hill, Mason Neck, Newington and the Fort Belvoir area for ambulatory, wheelchair, stretcher and bariatric trips. Inside Virginia we run under Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and our WMATC authority 3449 lets a Lorton pickup go to an appointment in DC or Montgomery or Prince George’s County and back on one booking. Dispatch answers around the clock at (703) 304-7889, or you can request a trip online.

Where we take Lorton riders

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital at 2501 Parkers Lane is the full-service hospital for most of Lorton, a straight run up Route 1. Parking there is free, with visitor lots marked blue, green and yellow. The hospital does not publish a single patient drop-off door, so for a discharge we confirm the entrance with the unit or the discharge planner before the van arrives.

Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center (formerly Fort Belvoir Community Hospital) sits on post at 9300 DeWitt Loop. Fort Belvoir is a Defense Department installation, and base access is the part to plan. Visitors without a DoD ID enter through Tulley Gate off Route 1 with a sponsor who holds a DoD ID, and get a pass through the Visitor Control Center at 9500 Pohick Road, open weekdays 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Vehicles can be inspected at the gate. Tell us it is a Belvoir appointment when you book, and we confirm the access arrangements before we take the trip.

South across the Occoquan, Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center on Opitz Boulevard in Woodbridge is off I-95 at Exit 156. Its main entrance is near the flag poles, and every visitor shows a government-issued photo ID at the door. Closer to home, Inova HealthPlex Lorton on Sanger Street offers outpatient imaging, including MRI, and lab work; we take riders there for scheduled tests, never to its emergency department.

We also run a regular schedule for residents of The Fairfax and its skilled nursing center, Belvoir Woods Health Care Center, both on Belvoir Woods Parkway; Harmony at Spring Hill in Laurel Hill; Mount Vernon Healthcare Center on Tis Well Drive; Greenspring in Springfield; Westminster at Lake Ridge; and Belmont Bay Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center on Route 1 in Woodbridge, which many directories still list under its old name, Envoy of Woodbridge.

Which ride fits a Lorton trip

Pick the level by how the rider moves on the day, not by how far they are going.

Ambulatory. A rider who walks with a steadying arm rides in the same wheelchair-accessible minivans and full-size vans as our wheelchair riders, and the driver walks with them from the door to the desk. If they can manage the steps of a Laurel Hill townhouse with the driver’s help, the stairs cost nothing extra.

Wheelchair. The rider stays in the chair, which goes up a ramp or a hydraulic lift and is secured at four points; we bring a chair if the rider doesn’t have one. Prices and local details are on our wheelchair transportation in Lorton page.

Stretcher. For a rider who can’t sit up safely for the trip, such as a discharge from Inova Mount Vernon to Belvoir Woods Health Care Center, two crew members run the trip bed to bed. See stretcher transportation.

Bariatric. Riders over 300 lbs travel in specialized vehicles with wider ramps and roomier interiors, with a second crew member when the transfer or the way out of the home calls for one. Give us as much notice as you can.

Not sure which fits? Call dispatch and describe the rider; sending the right vehicle matters more than anything else on the booking.

Pickup in Lorton, Mason Neck and Newington

  • Fort Belvoir trips. Tell us the building and the appointment time. Gate processing and vehicle inspection take time, and we build it into the pickup.
  • Laurel Hill. The old prison grounds are now neighborhoods, schools and parkland, and the streets can be hard to tell apart. Give us the house number and the nearest cross street, and the building name for Harmony at Spring Hill.
  • Mason Neck. The peninsula is rural, reached off Route 1 by Gunston Road, and drive times are longer than the mileage suggests. Tell us about a long driveway or steps, and if a rider in a wheelchair has to come down steps, we send a stair chair team for $75 each way.
  • Route 1, I-95 and the Fairfax County Parkway. Lorton sits between I-95 and Route 1, with the Parkway linking Belvoir to Newington and Springfield. We plan pickups around those corridors rather than guessing at traffic.

Dialysis and standing orders

We run standing dialysis schedules for Lorton, Newington and Mason Neck riders, including to:

  • DaVita Newington Dialysis, 8520 Cinder Bed Rd, Lorton
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Fort Belvoir, 8796 Sacramento Dr, Alexandria
  • DaVita Franconia Dialysis Center, 5695 King Centre Dr, Alexandria
  • Somatus Dialysis – Mount Vernon, 2501 Parkers Ln, Alexandria
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Potomac Mills / Lake Ridge, 3057 Golansky Blvd, Woodbridge

Two notes that save families a wrong turn. Fresenius Kidney Care Fort Belvoir is off post, on Sacramento Drive along the Route 1 corridor; there is no dialysis center on Fort Belvoir itself. And the Fresenius center that used to be at Lorton Station has closed, so riders who went there now go to one of the centers above.

Chair times are booked once, as a standing order. When treatment at DaVita Franconia or Somatus Dialysis – Mount Vernon runs over, call for the ride home as a will-call: a driver reaches the center within 45 minutes, and calling a little before the session ends shortens the wait. See dialysis transportation for details.

Booking, rates and who pays

Call dispatch at (703) 304-7889 at any hour, or book online. Same-day requests and discharges need at least three hours’ notice, a booking a day ahead is guaranteed, and changes or cancellations more than two hours before pickup cost nothing.

Rates. From Lorton, wheelchair and ambulatory round trips start at $55 per leg and stretcher round trips at $230 per leg. A stretcher discharge from Inova Mount Vernon home to Lorton Station, about nine miles, is $260 plus $36, or $296. The full card is on our rates page, and we quote every trip before you book.

Virginia Medicaid. A Lorton rider on Virginia Medicaid going to a covered medical service shouldn’t pay for the ride, and the plan books it, not us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Leave a few business days before routine appointments; the Virginia Medicaid transportation guide on our site covers who qualifies.

Medicare, private pay and facilities. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for wheelchair or stretcher vans; if a Medicare Advantage plan’s ride benefit is administered by MTM Health or SafeRide Health, book through the plan and ask for H&M Transport by name (see does Medicare cover wheelchair transportation). Private-pay riders pay the published rates with no doctor’s order needed, and hospitals, nursing centers and senior communities book on contracted rates through our facilities program.

Questions we get from Lorton families

How much does medical transportation from Lorton cost?

From Lorton, a wheelchair or ambulatory round trip is $55 per leg with five miles included on each leg, then $3.00 a mile; one way or a discharge is $90 plus $3.00 a mile. Stretcher trips are $230 per leg on a round trip, with five miles included on each leg and $4.00 a mile after, or $260 plus $4.00 a mile one way.

Can you take a patient to the medical center on Fort Belvoir?

Yes, with planning. Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center, formerly Fort Belvoir Community Hospital, is on post, and visitors without a DoD ID need a sponsor and a pass. Tell us when you book so we can confirm access first.

Does Virginia Medicaid cover medical rides from Lorton?

It should, when the trip is to a covered medical service such as dialysis at DaVita Franconia or a visit to Inova Mount Vernon, and the plan books the ride instead of us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Can you take me from Lorton into DC or Maryland?

Yes, into DC and to Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland. Virginia DMV Certificate #524 covers the Lorton side, WMATC authority 3449 covers the District and those two counties, and the rates stay the same.

Do you pick up after a discharge from Inova Mount Vernon Hospital?

Yes, with three hours notice. We confirm the unit and the entrance with the discharge planner, and the driver takes the rider home and inside.

Can you take a rider to an MRI at Inova HealthPlex Lorton?

Yes, for scheduled imaging and lab work on Sanger Street. Book the ride for the test time and tell us how long it should take; we never take riders to the HealthPlex’s emergency department.

Trips we don’t take

We run transportation, not medical care: there’s no monitoring or treatment on board, no ride to an emergency room, and no move between hospitals for a higher level of care, which is an ambulance’s job. We do run scheduled, stable transfers between facilities, such as Inova Mount Vernon to a rehab or nursing center. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.

Drivers who start near Lorton

Dispatch is in Gainesville, but the vans aren’t parked there. Drivers take them home and live across the service area, so a Lorton pickup is usually covered by someone who starts the day nearby and knows Route 1 and the Fairfax County Parkway, and a standing order tends to keep the same driver on the same route.
