Wheelchair Transportation in Lorton, VA

Lorton riders head in several directions for care: up Route 1 to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, onto Fort Belvoir, or to a dialysis chair in Newington. For a rider who uses a wheelchair, we send a van the chair rolls into and a driver who comes to the door, secures the chair and takes the rider inside at the other end.

Our pickups cover Lorton, Laurel Hill, Mason Neck, Newington and the neighborhoods around Fort Belvoir. A wheelchair round trip starts at $55 per leg, trips into DC or Montgomery or Prince George’s County are priced the same under WMATC authority 3449, and Virginia trips run under Virginia DMV Certificate #524. Reach dispatch any hour at (703) 304-7889 or request a trip online; our Lorton medical transportation page covers stretcher rides and riders who can walk.

How a wheelchair ride works from Lorton, Mason Neck or Laurel Hill

A Lorton pickup might be a long driveway off Gunston Road, a townhouse in Laurel Hill or a room at The Fairfax. Wherever it is, the driver comes to the door and brings the rider out, with a stair chair team if there are steps. The rider stays in the wheelchair, which rolls up a minivan ramp or onto a full-size van’s lift, is fastened to the floor at four points, and gets a lap and shoulder belt before the van moves off.

We take manual chairs, power chairs and scooters, and supply a chair at no extra cost when the rider needs one. A family member or caregiver can ride along free, as can a service animal.

At Inova Mount Vernon or the medical center on Fort Belvoir, the driver goes inside with the rider to the check-in desk. Drivers are CPR and first-aid certified, trained on manual and power chair securement, and pass a criminal background check and drug screening before they drive for us. Our dispatch office is in Gainesville, yet drivers keep their vans at home across the region, so the van at a Lorton door has usually started close by. H&M Transport was the first Virginia NEMT provider to earn NEMTAC accreditation, which audits driver training, securement and vehicles.

Where we take wheelchair riders from Lorton

Inova Mount Vernon Hospital on Parkers Lane is the closest full-service hospital, with free parking in its blue, green and yellow visitor lots. It does not publish one patient drop-off door, so for a discharge we confirm the entrance with the unit first.

Alexander T. Augusta Military Medical Center (formerly Fort Belvoir Community Hospital), at 9300 DeWitt Loop, is on a military post. Visitors without a DoD ID come in through Tulley Gate off Route 1 with a DoD-ID-holding sponsor and a pass from the Visitor Control Center, and vehicles may be inspected. Tell us when you book and we confirm access before the trip.

Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge is a short run down I-95, and Inova HealthPlex Lorton on Sanger Street handles outpatient imaging and lab work; we take riders there for scheduled tests, not to its emergency department. Regular pickups include The Fairfax on Belvoir Woods Parkway, Harmony at Spring Hill in Laurel Hill, Mount Vernon Healthcare Center and Greenspring in Springfield.

Dialysis rides from Lorton

Lorton riders on a three-day schedule often go to:

  • DaVita Newington Dialysis, 8520 Cinder Bed Rd, Lorton
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Fort Belvoir, 8796 Sacramento Dr, Alexandria (off post, on the Route 1 corridor)
  • DaVita Franconia Dialysis Center, 5695 King Centre Dr, Alexandria
  • Fresenius Kidney Care Potomac Mills / Lake Ridge, 3057 Golansky Blvd, Woodbridge

Fort Belvoir has no dialysis center of its own, and the Fresenius unit that used to operate at Lorton Station has closed, so Lorton riders go to one of the centers above. Give us the chair times once and the three-day schedule stays booked. If a chair runs late at DaVita Newington or Fresenius Fort Belvoir, the ride home becomes a will-call: a driver is at the center within 45 minutes of your call, and calling as treatment wraps up shortens the wait.

Wheelchair transportation prices in Lorton

From Lorton, as everywhere we drive, the fare is a pick-up charge plus miles, taken from our 2026 private-pay card.

Trip type Pick-up fee Included miles Per mile after
Round trip $55 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
One way or discharge $90 None $3.00
Bariatric round trip (300 lb+) $100 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
Bariatric one way (300 lb+) $130 None $3.00
Long distance (50+ miles) $175 None $4.50

Lorton Station to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is about nine miles up Route 1, so a round trip is $55 plus four extra miles at $3.00 on each leg: $67 a leg, $134 in all. The same trip one way, say a discharge home, counts every mile: $90 plus $27, or $117.

Anything extra is quoted before you book. Steps between the door and the driveway mean a stair chair team at $75 each way. Before 7am or after 6pm adds $30, a driver kept on hand during the appointment is $75 an hour, an extra stop is $20, and oxygen costs $35 per 2-liter tank unless the rider brings a portable. Cash or card is fine, with a 3% fee on cards; no personal checks. Itemized receipts are available, and every rate is on our rates page.

Wheelchair van or Fastran and MetroAccess?

Lorton families have public options, and they suit some trips well. Fairfax County Fastran gives rides to residents certified through a county human-services program, including a Critical Medical Care program for dialysis, chemotherapy and physical therapy. Fees are on a sliding scale, but medical trips are space-available, not guaranteed.

MetroAccess is WMATA’s shared, door-to-door paratransit for people who cannot use buses or trains. It needs a written application and an in-person interview, trips are booked ahead, and both ends must be within three-quarters of a mile of a Metrorail or Metrobus route. Parts of southern Lorton and Mason Neck may fall outside that corridor, so check the address. Fairfax Connector buses, including routes 171 on Richmond Highway, 335 to Fort Belvoir and 371 to Franconia-Springfield, are wheelchair accessible but fixed-route.

Book the van when the trip doesn’t fit those rules: today’s ride or a discharge from Inova Mount Vernon, help from inside the house to the desk, a fixed appointment time, a trip onto Fort Belvoir or into DC and Maryland, an address outside the MetroAccess corridor, or a rider who isn’t certified.

Pickup tips for Lorton homes and buildings

  • Fort Belvoir appointments need gate time. Tell us the building and the appointment and we plan around the pass and inspection.
  • Laurel Hill streets can look alike. Give us the house number, the nearest cross street, and for senior communities the building and entrance.
  • Mason Neck homes are spread out along Gunston Road and the lanes off it. Tell us about a long driveway or steps; a stair chair team is routine when we know ahead.
  • Apartments near Lorton Station often have shared lots. Tell us where a van can stop closest to the door.

Medicaid, Medicare and private pay in Lorton

Virginia Medicaid. If a Lorton rider has Virginia Medicaid and is headed to a covered medical service, the ride should be free to them, and the plan arranges it rather than us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Allow several business days for routine visits; our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide walks through it.

Medicare. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for wheelchair vans. If the rider’s Medicare Advantage plan runs its ride benefit through MTM Health or SafeRide Health, book through the plan and ask for H&M Transport by name.

Private pay and facilities. Private-pay riders are charged the quote, from the published card. Senior communities, nursing centers and hospital discharge planners can book on contracted rates through a facility account; see our facilities page.

Booking lead time and cancellations

Allow at least three hours for a same-day trip or a discharge from Inova Mount Vernon; a booking a day ahead is guaranteed. Same-day requests go straight to dispatch at (703) 304-7889, and we confirm every booking by call or text within two hours.

Put the specifics in the notes: the gate and building for a Fort Belvoir appointment, the house number and cross street in Laurel Hill, the length of a Mason Neck driveway, the appointment and how long it runs, and the number of steps. Riders over 300 lbs book bariatric service.

To cancel or change, reach us more than two hours before pickup and nothing is charged; a later cancellation or a no-show costs $50. Phone, email Reservations@hmtransport.com or use the app.

Wheelchair transportation in Lorton: common questions

What does a wheelchair round trip from Lorton Station to Inova Mount Vernon cost?

About $134. The hospital is roughly nine miles up Route 1, so each leg is $55 plus four miles at $3.00. One way, such as a discharge home, is $90 plus $3.00 a mile.

Can you take a wheelchair rider onto Fort Belvoir?

Yes, with some planning. Augusta Military Medical Center is on post, so a visitor without a DoD ID needs a sponsor and a pass from the Visitor Control Center, and vehicles can be inspected at the gate. Tell us when you book and we confirm access before the day of the trip.

Does Virginia Medicaid pay for a wheelchair ride from Lorton?

For a covered medical trip, such as dialysis at DaVita Newington or a visit to Inova Mount Vernon, yes, and the plan books the ride rather than us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Can a resident of The Fairfax go to an appointment in their own power chair?

Yes. Power chairs, manual chairs and scooters are secured at four points, and we bring a chair if one is needed. Tell us the building and entrance when you book.

Can you take a Lorton rider into DC or Maryland?

Yes. WMATC authority 3449 covers trips into DC and Montgomery and Prince George’s counties; inside Virginia we operate under Virginia DMV Certificate #524.

What if Fastran cannot fit in a dialysis trip?

Fastran medical trips are space-available. We can set up a standing order for the three-day schedule so the ride is on our books every week.

Will a driver wait during a long appointment?

We can, at $75 an hour if you book the wait ahead. For a long visit a will-call return usually costs less: call when the visit is nearly over and a driver is there within 45 minutes of the call.

What we won’t drive

Our vans carry riders to appointments; they don’t carry medical care. There’s no monitoring or treatment on board, no ride to an emergency room (Inova HealthPlex Lorton’s included), and no transfer to another hospital for a higher level of care, which is ambulance work. If it’s an emergency, call 911. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911. A rider who can’t sit up for the whole trip needs stretcher transportation.
