Stretcher Transportation in Leesburg, VA

A Leesburg stretcher trip usually begins at a bedside: a patient leaving Inova Loudoun Hospital in Lansdowne for home, a skilled nursing center downtown or the rehab unit at Reston Hospital Center. When the rider can’t sit up for the journey, a two-person crew brings the cot to the room and handles the move bed to bed.

We pick up across Leesburg, Lansdowne, Purcellville and Hamilton, and stretcher trips start at $230 per leg on a round trip. Our Virginia DMV Certificate #524 covers Loudoun and the rest of Virginia, and WMATC authority 3449 lets us bring a patient home from a hospital in DC, Montgomery or Prince George’s County. Request a trip online or call (703) 304-7889; riders who can sit up are covered on our Leesburg medical transportation page.

How a stretcher trip works in Leesburg

Stretcher transportation is for a rider who can’t sit upright safely for the whole trip. Two crew members come to the room, move the patient from the bed to a power-assisted Stryker cot that rides flat or reclined, and at the other end settle them into the bed, chair or exam table that’s waiting.

Each crew member has finished NEMTAC’s Certified Stretcher Operator course and cleared a criminal background check and a drug screen, and H&M Transport was Virginia’s first NEMTAC-accredited NEMT provider. With no medical care on board, the trip is priced well below an ambulance and scheduled like an appointment.

Leesburg hospitals and discharges

Most of our Leesburg stretcher discharges leave Inova Loudoun Hospital at 44045 Riverside Parkway in Lansdowne. Downtown, the Inova Loudoun Hospital Cornwall Campus on Cornwall Street NW handles behavioral health, imaging and rehab services, and we run stable transfers from there too. The two campuses are separate sites, so name the campus and the unit and the crew goes to the room.

We also take discharges from StoneSprings Hospital Center off Route 50 near South Riding and from Reston Hospital Center in Fairfax County.

Discharge planners get a three-hour maximum lead time, and changes or cancellations are free more than two hours before pickup. We run scheduled transfers between facilities when the patient is stable; a move to another hospital for a higher level of care goes by ambulance.

Rehab, skilled nursing and hospice

A large share of our Loudoun stretcher work is the move out of acute care. Reston Hospital Center has a dedicated 30-bed inpatient rehab unit for physical, occupational, speech and neuro rehab, a common next stop for Leesburg patients.

Downtown, Heritage Hall on Morven Park Road offers skilled nursing, short-term rehab, memory care, hospice and respite care. Loudoun Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Old Waterford Road provides short-term rehab and long-term care; some listings still show an older name. East on Route 7, we serve the Johnson Center at Falcons Landing in Potomac Falls, the nursing and rehab care at Ashby Ponds in Ashburn, and Potomac Falls Health & Rehab Center in Sterling. We also run hospice discharges home.

For dialysis riders who can no longer manage a chair, we run standing stretcher schedules to DaVita Leesburg on the Cornwall campus and DaVita Lansdowne on Riverside Parkway.

Paratransit, rideshare and stretcher riders

LC Transit paratransit, MetroAccess and the county’s other services carry riders who sit up, in a seat or a wheelchair, and a rideshare needs a passenger who can get in unaided. A Leesburg patient who has to lie flat needs a stretcher van, or an ambulance if they need care on the way, which is why discharge planners, nursing centers and hospice teams call us for these trips.

Leesburg homes, gatehouses and stairways

  • Lansdowne Woods has high-rise and low-rise buildings behind a gatehouse staffed around the clock. Tell us the building, the entrance and whether the elevator takes a cot.
  • Houses in Purcellville and Hamilton often have front steps or a long walk. Tell us the step count and whether the stairway turns; the stair team handles it.
  • Senior campuses such as Falcons Landing and Ashby Ponds have separate buildings for nursing and memory care. Give us the building name.
  • Oxygen. Include the rider’s flow rate in the booking.

Paying for a Leesburg stretcher trip

Virginia Medicaid. When the trip is to a covered medical service, a Virginia Medicaid member shouldn’t pay for the stretcher ride, and Medicaid’s broker arranges it; it isn’t booked directly with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Medicare. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for a stretcher van; it covers an ambulance when one is medically necessary and documented. If a Medicare Advantage plan’s ride benefit is administered by MTM Health or SafeRide Health, book through the plan and ask for H&M Transport by name.

Private pay and facilities. Families who pay directly are charged the published card, and no doctor’s order is required. Discharge planners at hospitals, nursing facilities and hospices book on contracted rates; see our facilities page.

Booking a Leesburg stretcher trip

Call (703) 304-7889 for same-day trips and discharges. Three hours is our minimum notice and we cover most requests inside it; a booking a day ahead is guaranteed, and we confirm by call or text within two hours.

Tell us the campus and unit, the destination, the patient’s weight, any oxygen and its flow rate, and the steps at the home, including whether the stairway turns. The stair team adds $75 each way, and patients over 300 lbs need bariatric service so the reinforced cot is assigned.

Cancel or change more than two hours before pickup at no charge; later, or a no-show, is $50. Phone, email Reservations@hmtransport.com or use the app.

Stretcher transportation in Leesburg: common questions

What does a stretcher discharge from Inova Loudoun Hospital to a Leesburg nursing center cost?

About $288 for a seven-mile trip such as Inova Loudoun to Loudoun Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, because a one-way stretcher ride is $260 plus $4.00 a mile. A round trip is $230 per leg, with five miles included on each leg and $4.00 a mile after.

Do you take stretcher discharges from Inova Loudoun Hospital?

Yes. Give us three hours’ notice, the campus and unit, the destination and the number of steps at home, and the crew comes up to the room.

Can you move a patient to the rehab unit at Reston Hospital Center?

Yes, as a scheduled transfer once the patient is stable, and the crew settles them in the room on the rehab unit. A move to another hospital for a higher level of care is an ambulance trip, so we don’t take those.

Can a Virginia Medicaid member book a Leesburg stretcher ride with us?

Through Medicaid, yes: when the trip is to covered medical care, the member pays nothing, and the ride is arranged by Medicaid’s transportation broker instead of booked with us directly. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Can you bring a patient home to Leesburg from a DC or Maryland hospital?

Yes, from DC and from Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. WMATC authority 3449 covers those trips, Virginia DMV Certificate #524 covers the Virginia end, and the rates are the same.

Why do you send two people on every stretcher ride?

Lifting an adult from a bed onto a cot, and off it again at the other end, is a two-person job, and it’s safer for the patient that way.

Stretcher van or ambulance?

A stretcher van carries a stable patient lying down, with no medical care or monitoring on board. We don’t take anyone to an emergency room or move a patient to another hospital for a higher level of care, but we do run scheduled transfers between facilities, such as hospital to rehab or to a nursing home. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.
