Stretcher Transportation in Fairfax, VA

In Fairfax County a stretcher trip usually means a patient leaving one of the big Inova campuses, on Gallows Road or at Fair Oaks, for home, a rehab bed or a nursing center, or a bedbound rider going to a scheduled scan or procedure. The patient can’t sit up for the trip, so two crew members bring the cot to the room.

We pick up in Fairfax City and across Fairfax County, including Merrifield, Vienna, Oakton, Burke and Annandale, and in Falls Church, at any hour; stretcher round trips start at $230 per leg. Virginia trips run under our Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and WMATC authority 3449 covers trips to or from DC, Montgomery or Prince George’s County. Request a trip online or call (703) 304-7889; for riders who sit up, see our Fairfax medical transportation page.

A Fairfax stretcher trip, start to finish

The crew arrives at the bedside with a power-assisted Stryker cot, which raises and lowers under power and rides flat or reclined, and the two of them move the patient onto it together. They roll the cot out through the tower or the front door, load it, and at the other end transfer the patient into the bed or chair that’s waiting, not onto a hallway gurney.

Every crew member is a NEMTAC Certified Stretcher Operator and has cleared a criminal background check and a drug screen; H&M Transport was Virginia’s first NEMTAC-accredited NEMT provider. A stretcher van carries no medical care, which keeps it well below the cost of an ambulance and lets you book it ahead like any appointment.

Fairfax hospitals and discharges

Inova Fairfax Hospital on Gallows Road is where most Fairfax stretcher discharges begin. Its discharge suite sits on the ground floor beside Diagnostic Imaging and the Green Garage skywalk, and the campus spreads across several towers with three visitor garages and separate entrances for the emergency department and the surgery center, so tell us the tower and unit and the crew heads straight to the room.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital on Joseph Siewick Drive, with free parking and its own main entrance, sends home most patients from the western side of the county, and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital handles the south. Discharge planners get a three-hour maximum lead time and free changes more than two hours before pickup, and if a discharge slips, call: we move the pickup instead of sending the crew away.

Rehab, nursing homes, hospice and dialysis

Most Fairfax stretcher trips end at a skilled nursing or rehabilitation facility, or at home with hospice care waiting. We run scheduled transfers between facilities when the patient is stable, such as hospital to rehab or hospital to a nursing home, and home-going trips for hospice discharges, where timing and a gentle transfer matter most.

We also take stretcher riders to scheduled outpatient care: imaging at the Inova Center for Personalized Health in Merrifield, procedures at the surgery centers around the county, and dialysis for riders who can no longer manage a chair, at centers such as DaVita Fairfax on Arlington Boulevard and U.S. Renal Care Fairfax on Walnut Street. For recurring trips, a standing order keeps the schedule on our books.

MetroAccess, FASTRAN and stretcher patients

MetroAccess, FASTRAN and the county’s other programs are designed for riders who can sit, in a seat or a wheelchair, and a rideshare needs someone who can get into the car alone. A Fairfax patient who must travel lying down needs a stretcher van, or an ambulance when care is needed on the way, which is why hospital discharge teams, nursing centers and hospice nurses make most of our stretcher bookings.

Fairfax stairways, towers and home hospital beds

  • Stairs and turns. Split-levels and townhouses across Burke, Annandale and Fairfax City often have a turn halfway up. Tell us the step count and the turn, and the stair team is on the trip.
  • Towers. Buildings in Merrifield, the Mosaic District and Tysons usually route a cot through the loading dock and the service elevator, and some want notice. Tell us both entrances and any reservation the building needs.
  • Hospital beds. If a hospital bed has been delivered for a discharge home, tell us which room it’s in so the crew can plan the path from the door.
  • Oxygen. Add the flow rate to the booking.

Paying for a Fairfax stretcher ride

Virginia Medicaid. When a Virginia Medicaid member is going to covered medical care, the stretcher ride costs them nothing, and the plan’s broker arranges it rather than our dispatch. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide walks through it.

Medicare. A stretcher van isn’t covered by Original Medicare, which pays for an ambulance only when one is medically necessary and documented. When a Medicare Advantage plan’s ride benefit is administered by MTM Health or SafeRide Health, book through the plan and ask for H&M Transport.

Private pay and facilities. Paying directly means the published card and no doctor’s order. Hospitals, skilled nursing centers and hospices book on contracted rates through our facilities page.

Booking a Fairfax stretcher trip

Same-day trips and discharges are booked by phone at (703) 304-7889. Three hours is the minimum notice, and most requests are covered inside it; a booking made the day before is guaranteed, and we confirm by call or text within two hours.

Tell us the tower and unit, the destination, the patient’s weight, any oxygen and its flow rate, and the steps at home and whether the stairway turns. Patients over 300 lbs book bariatric service so the reinforced cot comes, and the stair team is $75 each way.

Changes and cancellations are free more than two hours before pickup; later than that, or a no-show, is $50. Phone, email Reservations@hmtransport.com or use our app.

Stretcher transportation in Fairfax: common questions

What does a stretcher ride home from Inova Fairfax Hospital to Fairfax City cost?

About $284. The run is roughly six miles, priced as $260 plus $4.00 for each mile. Booked as a round trip it would be $230 a leg, plus $4.00 for every mile past the first five.

Can you take a stretcher discharge from Inova Fairfax today?

Usually, if we have three hours’ notice. Give us the tower and unit and the time the floor expects to release the patient, and the crew comes up to the room.

Do you move patients from the hospital to rehab or a nursing home?

Yes, as a scheduled transfer once the patient is stable, and the crew settles them into the bed at the rehab or nursing center. A move to another hospital for a higher level of care is an ambulance trip.

Can you take a bedbound patient to an appointment at the Inova Center for Personalized Health?

Yes. Tell us the appointment time and how long it will take; the crew can wait at $100 an hour, or we schedule a return pickup.

Does Medicare pay for a stretcher van in Fairfax?

No, Original Medicare doesn’t pay for a stretcher van; it covers an ambulance when one is medically necessary. A Medicare Advantage plan whose ride benefit MTM Health or SafeRide Health administers can book us; go through the plan.

Can a family member ride along?

Usually, yes, depending on the vehicle. Tell us when you book so we send a van with a seat free.

Does Medicaid cover stretcher rides in Fairfax?

For covered medical care, yes, and the patient pays nothing, though the trip is arranged by Medicaid’s transportation broker instead of with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Stretcher van or ambulance?

A stretcher van moves a stable patient lying down; it doesn’t carry medical care or monitoring. We don’t go to emergency rooms or move patients to another hospital for a higher level of care, but scheduled transfers between facilities are routine for us. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.
