Wheelchair Transportation in Ashburn, VA

Ashburn’s care is spread out: Inova Loudoun Hospital is in Lansdowne, StoneSprings sits off Route 50 to the south, and Reston Hospital Center is a regular run to the east. A rider who uses a wheelchair needs more than a hop across the street, so we send a van with a ramp or lift and a driver who handles the chair, the door and the walk inside at each end.

Pickups run across Ashburn, Brambleton, Broadlands, Lansdowne, Ashburn Farm and the rest of eastern Loudoun County. Wheelchair round trips start at $55 per leg. Inside Virginia we drive under Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and WMATC authority 3449 extends a trip into DC or to Montgomery or Prince George’s County. Call (703) 304-7889 around the clock or book online; for stretcher rides and riders who walk, see our Ashburn and Loudoun medical transportation page.

What an Ashburn wheelchair ride looks like, start to finish

At pickup the driver comes to the door you name, at the front desk of a senior campus or up the walk of a single-family home in Broadlands, and brings the rider out to the van; when there are steps the rider can’t take, a stair chair team comes along. The rider never leaves the wheelchair: it rolls up a minivan ramp or rides a full-size van’s lift, four tie-downs hold it, and a lap and shoulder belt goes on before the van moves.

We carry manual chairs, power chairs and scooters, and we’ll bring a wheelchair at no cost if the rider’s own won’t work for the trip. A family member or caregiver rides free, and service animals are welcome.

At Inova Loudoun the driver takes the rider to the right building on the Lansdowne campus, the hospital or the surgery center in Physicians Building II, and at a dialysis center, to the chair. Drivers hold CPR and first-aid certification, are trained to secure manual and power chairs, and pass a criminal background check and drug screening. They start the day from home across the region rather than from our Gainesville dispatch office. H&M Transport is NEMTAC-accredited, the first NEMT provider in Virginia to earn it, and that audit covers training, securement and vehicles.

The hospitals and clinics Ashburn riders use

Inova Loudoun Hospital on Riverside Parkway in Lansdowne is the main hospital for Ashburn and a regular Loudoun destination for us. Parking is free, with visitors directed to the North Garage and the north and south surface lots. Inova Surgery Center – Loudoun is on the same campus, on the second floor of Physicians Building II to the right of the hospital, and is open weekdays from 6 a.m. Tell us which building the appointment is in so the driver stops at the right door.

StoneSprings Hospital Center on Stone Springs Boulevard serves the southern side of the county, and its medical office building across the street connects to the hospital by an indoor walkway, which makes for an easy drop-off for outpatient visits. Reston Hospital Center on Town Center Parkway is the other hospital many Ashburn riders use. Closer to home, Inova Health Center – Ashburn on Landmark Court houses primary care, orthopedics, imaging and physical therapy.

We also run regular trips for residents of Ashby Ponds on Audubon Square, a large senior community with its own medical center and front desk.

Dialysis rides from Ashburn

Eastern Loudoun has a good spread of dialysis centers, and we run standing schedules to them:

  • DaVita Ashburn Dialysis, 19980 Highland Vista Dr
  • DaVita Lansdowne Dialysis, 44084 Riverside Pkwy
  • Pure Life Renal of Lansdowne, 19490 Sandridge Way
  • DaVita Leesburg Virginia Dialysis, 224D Cornwall St NW, at the Inova Loudoun Cornwall Campus
  • Legacy Dialysis of Virginia, 211 Gibson St NW, Leesburg
  • DaVita Reston Dialysis Center, 530 Huntmar Park Dr, which despite its name is in Herndon

We set the dialysis days and chair times once as a standing order, and they repeat without a weekly call. If treatment at DaVita Ashburn or Pure Life Renal runs past its slot, the ride home turns into a will-call: the van is at the center within 45 minutes of your call, and calling a little before the session ends cuts the wait.

Wheelchair transportation prices in Ashburn

What an Ashburn trip costs depends on the trip type and the distance; the 2026 private-pay card below has both.

Trip type Pick-up fee Included miles Per mile after
Round trip $55 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
One way or discharge $90 None $3.00
Bariatric round trip (300 lb+) $100 per leg 5 per leg $3.00
Bariatric one way (300 lb+) $130 None $3.00
Long distance (50+ miles) $175 None $4.50

Ashburn Village to Inova Loudoun Hospital is a little over three miles, and Ashburn Farm about four and a half, so either round trip stays inside the five miles included on each leg: $110. Brambleton to StoneSprings Hospital Center is about four miles, also $110. Coming home one way from Inova Loudoun to Broadlands, about seven miles, is $90 plus $21, or $111. Ashby Ponds to Reston Hospital Center is about ten miles each way: $55 plus five miles at $3.00, so $70 a leg and $140 round trip.

Anything extra is priced in the quote: $75 each way for a stair chair team, $30 for a pickup before 7am or after 6pm, $75 an hour for prescheduled waiting, $20 for an added stop, and $35 per 2-liter oxygen tank, or nothing if the rider brings a portable unit. Payment is cash or card, with 3% extra on cards, and personal checks aren’t accepted; ask for an itemized receipt and you’ll get one. Our rates page shows the full card.

Wheelchair van or Loudoun paratransit?

Loudoun County Transit runs fare-free ADA paratransit for residents whose disability keeps them off the local bus. It needs an approved application, rides are booked one to five days ahead, and the shared rides run curb to curb on the days and hours the local buses run. MetroAccess, WMATA’s door-to-door shared-ride service, covers places within three-quarters of a mile of Metrorail and Metrobus service, so for an Ashburn address it depends on the distance to a Silver Line station; WMATA confirms addresses at 301-562-5360. For residents at or below 70% of the area median income who are uninsured or whose insurance doesn’t cover rides, the county’s CareNET program provides free medical trips, up to five local ones a month, when a case manager requests them 48 to 72 hours ahead.

Those services fit some trips well. Call us for the rest: a same-day ride or a discharge, a rider who needs help from inside the house, an appointment at a fixed time, a trip outside bus hours, or a destination beyond the paratransit area.

Pickup tips for Ashburn homes

  • Townhouse communities in Ashburn Farm, Broadlands and Brambleton often have garages at the back and steps at the front. Tell us which side is level and how many steps there are.
  • HOA streets and private roads sometimes restrict parking. A short note on where the van can stop saves time on the day.
  • Senior communities such as Ashby Ponds have a front desk and set pickup points; tell us the building and the driver meets the rider there.
  • Route 7 and the Greenway are predictable at rush hour. We build the traffic into the pickup time for trips to Reston, Fairfax and DC.

How Ashburn riders pay

Virginia Medicaid. For a covered medical trip, a Virginia Medicaid member pays nothing, and the plan sets up the ride, not us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Call several business days ahead for routine visits; the details are in our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide.

Medicare. Original Medicare won’t cover a wheelchair van and pays for an ambulance only when it’s medically necessary. When a Medicare Advantage plan’s rides are administered by MTM Health or SafeRide Health, schedule through the plan and request H&M Transport by name.

Private pay and facilities. Private-pay riders pay the published rates, without a doctor’s order. Hospitals, skilled nursing facilities and senior communities book on contracted rates through our facilities program.

Before you book: notice, notes, changes

Same-day rides and discharges need at least three hours’ notice, and a ride booked a day early is guaranteed. Phone same-day requests to dispatch at (703) 304-7889; a call or text confirming the booking follows within two hours.

Use the notes for the side of the townhouse that’s level, the building and pickup point at a senior campus, the appointment and how long it should take, and how many steps there are. A rider over 300 lbs should be booked as bariatric.

Cancel or change more than two hours before pickup and nothing is charged; a later cancellation or a no-show is $50. Reach us by phone, at Reservations@hmtransport.com or in the app.

Wheelchair transportation in Ashburn: common questions

What does a round trip from Ashburn Village to Inova Loudoun Hospital cost?

$110. The hospital is a little over three miles away, inside the five miles included on each leg. Longer legs add $3.00 a mile past five, and a one-way ride is $90 plus $3.00 a mile.

Do you pick up at Inova Loudoun Hospital?

Yes, for appointments and discharges, with three hours notice for a discharge. Tell us whether it is the main hospital or the surgery center in Physicians Building II.

How is this different from Loudoun County Transit paratransit?

The county’s paratransit needs an approved application, is booked one to five days ahead and runs shared, curb to curb, during bus hours. With us there’s nothing to apply for, a same-day ride usually works on three hours’ notice, and the driver comes inside for the rider and walks them in at the appointment.

Can you take Ashburn riders to Fairfax, Reston or DC?

Yes. Reston and Fairfax run under our Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and for DC, Montgomery or Prince George’s County, WMATC authority 3449 applies, at the same prices.

Can you pick up at Ashby Ponds?

Yes. Tell us the building and the pickup point, and the driver checks in at the front desk and meets the rider there.

Can you take an Ashburn rider to dialysis at DaVita Lansdowne three days a week?

Yes, as a standing order, at DaVita Lansdowne on Riverside Parkway or any other center: the chair days and times go in once and repeat each week. A late session turns the ride home into a will-call, with the van at the center within 45 minutes of your call; a call shortly before treatment ends shortens the wait.

Does Virginia Medicaid cover an Ashburn rider’s trips to dialysis or Inova Loudoun?

It does when the trip is for covered care, dialysis and hospital visits included, and the member owes nothing; the ride is booked through Medicaid’s broker, not through our dispatch. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

The rides a van can’t take

We provide transportation only: no one on board gives medical care or monitors the rider, we don’t drive to emergency rooms, and a transfer to another hospital for a higher level of care is an ambulance trip. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911. A rider who can’t sit upright for the length of the trip needs stretcher transportation.
