Stretcher Transportation in Manassas, VA

Most Manassas stretcher trips start on a floor at UVA Health Prince William Medical Center on Sudley Road and end a few miles away: a house in Bristow, a townhouse in Manassas Park, or a bed at Birmingham Green. Our dispatch office is next door in Gainesville, up Route 29, so a same-day discharge here is usually simple to set up.

We pick up across the City of Manassas, Manassas Park, Bristow, Nokesville and the Sudley Road corridor, and stretcher round trips start at $230 per leg. Prince William and the rest of Virginia run under our Virginia DMV Certificate #524, and WMATC authority 3449 covers a trip to or from DC, Montgomery or Prince George’s County. Request a trip online or call (703) 304-7889; riders who can sit up are on our Manassas medical transportation page.

What happens on a Manassas stretcher trip

A stretcher van is for a patient who can’t sit up safely for the whole ride. Two crew members bring a power-assisted Stryker cot up to the bedside, slide the patient across, and keep them flat or reclined on the way. At the other end they don’t leave the patient on the cot: they move them into the bed, recliner or exam table that’s waiting.

Both crew members have completed NEMTAC’s Certified Stretcher Operator course and passed a criminal background check and a drug screen, and H&M Transport was the first NEMT provider in Virginia to hold NEMTAC accreditation. Because nobody on board gives medical care, a stretcher van costs far less than an ambulance and is booked like any other appointment.

Manassas hospitals and discharges

UVA Health Prince William Medical Center at 8700 Sudley Road is the source of most of our Manassas stretcher discharges. Parking is free, and the main lobby is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.; after that, the emergency and admitting entrance is the way in, so we coordinate late discharges with the floor. UVA Health Haymarket Medical Center on Heathcote Boulevard is the other nearby hospital.

Prince William patients discharged from Inova Fairfax or Inova Fair Oaks come home with us every day, a 20-mile run from Gallows Road or about 11 miles from Fair Oaks to Manassas Park. Case managers get a three-hour maximum lead time, and a change or cancellation is free more than two hours before pickup.

Rehab, nursing care and hospice in Manassas

Birmingham Green on Centreville Road, a 54-acre campus with nursing care, assisted living, rehabilitation and memory care, is a regular stretcher destination for us. We run scheduled transfers between facilities when the patient is stable, such as hospital to rehab or hospital to a nursing home, and hospice discharges home across Prince William County.

For dialysis riders who can no longer manage a chair, we run standing stretcher schedules to DaVita CDC Manassas on Lomond Drive and Fresenius Kidney Care Manassas on West Courthouse Road.

Stretcher transportation prices in Manassas

A Manassas stretcher fare is two numbers from the 2026 private-pay card: the pick-up fee, which pays for the van and both crew members, and the miles.

Trip type Pick-up fee Included miles Per mile after
Round trip $230 per leg 5 per leg $4.00
One way or discharge $260 None $4.00
Bariatric round trip (300 lb+) $325 per leg 5 per leg $4.00
Bariatric one way (300 lb+) $365 None $4.00
Long distance (50+ miles) $300 None $6.00

Home to Bristow from UVA Health Prince William is about five miles, so the discharge is $260 plus $20, or $280. Nokesville is roughly nine miles from the hospital: $296. A round trip from Birmingham Green to an appointment at the hospital, about two miles each way, stays inside the five miles each leg includes, so it’s $460.

Extras are priced before you book: the stair team at $75 each way, $50 for a pickup before 7am or after 6pm, $100 an hour if the crew waits, $30 for a stop on the way, $35 for each 2-liter oxygen tank, and 3% on card payments. The whole card is on our rates page.

OmniRide Access, rideshare and patients who lie flat

OmniRide Access, MetroAccess and the volunteer driver programs in Prince William all carry riders who sit up, in a seat or in a wheelchair, and a rideshare driver needs a passenger who can climb in. A patient who has to stay flat needs a stretcher van, or an ambulance if they need treatment on the way, so most of our Manassas stretcher calls come from discharge planners, nursing staff and hospice teams.

Manassas homes, long drives and campus buildings

  • Townhouses. Many in Manassas and Manassas Park have a few steps at the door and a turn at the top of the stairs inside. Give us the count and the layout, and the stair team comes along.
  • Rural drives. Toward Nokesville and Bristow some homes sit at the end of a long gravel lane. Tell us where the van can turn around and how far the cot has to roll.
  • Birmingham Green. The campus on Centreville Road has separate buildings for nursing care, assisted living and memory care, so name the building and the crew uses its entrance.
  • Oxygen. Put the flow rate in the booking notes.

Paying for a Manassas stretcher ride

Virginia Medicaid. A Virginia Medicaid member going to a covered medical service shouldn’t pay for a stretcher ride, and the trip is set up by Medicaid’s broker rather than booked with us. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride. Our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide explains the steps.

Medicare. Original Medicare pays for an ambulance when it’s medically necessary and documented, but not for a stretcher van. If your Medicare Advantage plan’s ride benefit runs through MTM Health or SafeRide Health, book through the plan and name H&M Transport.

Private pay and facilities. Families pay the published card and don’t need a doctor’s order. Hospitals, nursing centers and hospices book on contracted rates; see our facilities page.

Booking a stretcher trip in Manassas

Phone (703) 304-7889 for a same-day trip or a discharge. We need three hours’ notice at minimum and fill most requests inside that window; a trip booked a day ahead is guaranteed, and a call or text confirms it within two hours.

Give us the unit or room, where the patient is going, their weight, any oxygen and the flow rate, and the steps at the house, including whether the stairway turns. The stair team adds $75 each way, and a patient over 300 lbs needs bariatric service and its reinforced cot.

Cancelling or changing is free more than two hours before pickup; after that, or for a no-show, the fee is $50. Call, email Reservations@hmtransport.com or use the app.

Stretcher transportation in Manassas: common questions

What does a stretcher discharge from UVA Health Prince William to Bristow cost?

About $280. Bristow is roughly five miles from the hospital, and a one-way stretcher trip is $260 plus $4.00 a mile. On a round trip each leg is $230 with five miles included, then $4.00 a mile.

How fast can you arrange a stretcher discharge in Manassas?

Usually the same day, as long as we have three hours’ notice. The crew is based nearby, so give us the unit and the time the floor expects to release the patient, and call if it slips.

Can you pick up at UVA Health Prince William after 8 p.m.?

Yes. When the main lobby closes at 8 p.m., the way in is the emergency and admitting entrance, so we agree a meeting point with the nursing station before the crew arrives.

Do you move patients from the hospital to Birmingham Green or another facility?

Yes, once the patient is stable and the move is scheduled; the crew settles them into the room at Birmingham Green or any other facility. Transfers to another hospital for a higher level of care go by ambulance.

Will Virginia Medicaid cover a stretcher ride to dialysis in Manassas?

Yes, for covered treatment such as dialysis at DaVita CDC Manassas or Fresenius Kidney Care Manassas, and the member pays nothing; Medicaid’s broker sets the trip up, not our dispatch team. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Why does every stretcher trip have two crew members?

Lifting an adult between a bed and a cot, and down a set of stairs, takes two people to do safely. Neither crew member drives off until the patient is settled at the other end.

Can you bring a Manassas patient home from a DC hospital?

Yes, and from Montgomery and Prince George’s counties too. WMATC authority 3449 covers those trips, Virginia DMV Certificate #524 covers the Prince William end, and the rates don’t change.

Stretcher van or ambulance?

A stretcher van is transportation for a stable patient, not treatment. There’s no monitoring or medical care on board, we never take anyone to an emergency room, and a move to another hospital for a higher level of care belongs to an ambulance; scheduled transfers between facilities, such as hospital to rehab, are ours. If this is a medical emergency, call 911. If a rider becomes unwell, the driver stops safely and calls 911.
