Anthem HealthKeepers Plus Transportation in Northern Virginia

Anthem HealthKeepers Plus, a Virginia Medicaid (Cardinal Care) health plan, covers rides to medical and dental visits and to the pharmacy at no cost to members. Anthem’s rides are arranged through MTM Health, and H&M Transport takes Anthem wheelchair, stretcher and ambulatory trips across Northern Virginia through MTM. Call the transportation number on your Medicaid ID card; the brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health. Request H&M Transport specifically when you book your ride.

Anthem asks members to book routine rides at least two business days before the appointment. This page covers what the benefit includes, how to request H&M Transport, and what to do when the trip falls outside the benefit. For the rules that apply to every Virginia Medicaid plan, see our Virginia Medicaid transportation guide.

What the Anthem HealthKeepers Plus ride benefit covers

  • Medical, dental and pharmacy trips. Anthem describes these rides as unlimited, as long as the trip is to a covered service.
  • Every level of service. Members who walk, members who stay in a wheelchair, and members who need a stretcher are all covered at the level they need.
  • Recurring treatment. For dialysis, substance use treatment and adult day care, the member’s provider can set up recurring rides that Anthem approves three months at a time.
  • A companion. One escort aged 18 or older can ride along when there is room and it is medically needed. An adult may always ride with a child.
  • Some non-medical rides. Anthem also offers a limited number of rides to grocery stores, farmers markets and food banks. Check the member handbook for the current limits.
  • Mileage. A family member who drives the member may be reimbursed; call five business days before the appointment.

How to book an Anthem ride with H&M Transport

  1. Call the transportation number on the Anthem HealthKeepers Plus ID card at least two business days before the appointment. Virginia’s Medicaid agency lists Anthem’s transportation line as (877) 892-3988.
  2. Give the member’s ID, the appointment details and the level of service. Say whether the member stays in a wheelchair, needs a stretcher, uses oxygen, or has steps at the home.
  3. Request H&M Transport specifically. The brokers we work with are MTM Health and SafeRide Health, and Anthem’s rides go through MTM Health. The broker makes the final assignment, and your request is noted on the trip.
  4. For dialysis, ask for a standing order. The dialysis center usually starts it. Once it is set up, the rides repeat without a call each week.

Anthem rides we run most often

Most of our Anthem trips are to places our drivers already see every day:

  • Dialysis three times a week, with the same drivers on the same schedule.
  • Cancer treatment: chemotherapy and radiation, where appointments repeat for weeks.
  • Physical therapy and rehab after surgery or a stroke, often in a wheelchair for the first weeks.
  • Specialist and hospital outpatient visits at Inova, UVA Health Prince William, Sentara Northern Virginia and VHC Health.

Every trip is door-through-door, and a wheelchair rider stays in the chair: it goes up a ramp on our minivans or a hydraulic lift on our full-size vans and is secured at four points.

When the Anthem benefit won’t cover it

Some trips fall outside the benefit: a ride booked with less than two business days’ notice that isn’t urgent, an extra stop, or a trip that isn’t to a covered service. A member who isn’t eligible that month is also outside it.

Private pay. When a ride is not covered, or the plan cannot schedule it in time, families can book H&M Transport directly at our published rates. Wheelchair trips start at $55 per leg on a round trip and stretcher trips at $230 per leg, the same in Virginia, Maryland and DC. No doctor’s order is needed for a private-pay ride. See our private-pay guide or the full rates page.

A discharge that can’t wait for the plan is the most common case. We need three hours notice for a discharge, and hospitals and skilled nursing facilities can book on contracted rates through our facilities page.

Anthem HealthKeepers Plus and Medicare

Members who have both Medicare and Medicaid may be in Anthem’s dual special needs plan, which Virginia aligns with the member’s Anthem Medicaid plan. For these members, Medicaid is what pays for non-emergency rides. See our Medicare Advantage transportation guide for how the two fit together.

What we don’t do

H&M Transport runs non-emergency medical transportation. There is no medical care or monitoring on board, we never take anyone to an emergency room, and we do not move patients between hospitals for a higher level of care. We do run scheduled, stable transfers between facilities, such as hospital to rehab or to a nursing home. If a rider becomes unwell during a trip, the driver stops safely and calls 911. In an emergency, call 911.
